Spent a few days boating out of little sand bay. We had great weather for boating. This area is incredibly beautiful.
While not a fishing outing I did find a 28″ floating walleye and I found large pods of smallys and either whitefish or ciscoes on the tip of an island.
I would recommend this area to anyone who loves to boat. The caves are awesome along with the light houses and awesome beaches. I think I saw one boat on Thursday and three on Friday.

This walleye was a floater and had the eyes picked out from some seagulls but was still green. A nice fish by anyone’s standards. I’ll be back to this area for some fishing!

Almost capsized there, had to be rescued by park patrol, they almost dropped the boat because a storm was coming in.

How packed was the campground? Probably going to Herbster or there next week (don’t need a site for weekend). Thanks

We were a little concerned about this aspect of the trip. We tented and got lucky on a perfect sight to park my boat with plenty of distance. Other community campgrounds had tent camping closed but RV camping ok so call ahead. Most of our awake time was out in the boat! Beach combing and exploring. Big storm in the area shut down trails and some hiking aspects of the area.
To answer your question. Yes. But I had no problem with it though I did get hollered at by a park ranger for getting to close. Morning coffee does that to me

Thanks for the info Bigpike. My folks live about 45 min south of there and would try to lock me down a spot with the camper on monday morning and I’d bring the boat up. The campground they usually use is no reservations and no landing so we’ll see if we can upgrade to the east a little bit.

Where do you launch your boat at? And how far of a boat ride is it. I have never been but man it looks awesome

Little sand bay has an awesome port of call with landing. $7 I believe. You can dock your boat over night for $30. Devils island and the caves to the west were my farthest rides. Devils was 10 miles.

Looks like a great place to explore; your pics caught my FW’s interest for sure, and your info provides a good starting point. Any motels nearby? Would be very tough to be in these waters and not fish; I’d definitely sneak a few rods into the rod lockers.

Some huge Pike come out of that area. Big husky jerks are my favorite to throw for them.

Bringing this back up. My wife and her sister where just up there for a few days with the kids they just camped and took the ferry out to Madeline island. My wife wants to go back and I agreed but want to bring my boat. Just wondering how it is to maneuver into the caves and what island the beach was on. Also are the hazards well marked I have never been on a great lake so am a little concerned as I have an 8 and 3 year old. I’m assuming a matine radio is a must.

Out of little sand bay I found beaches to the south on the mainland, that way is good caves also that you can boat through. But all the islands seem to have there own caves and there own beaches of various sizes. Go around the first point and the caves start about 1 mile south.
The islands due north and east all have beaches. Sand Island is straight north and a little west, I dont recall a beach on that island but I’m guessing there’s atleast 1 there.
If you have a base map for Lowrance or Bird you will have the depths. No rock bars and plenty of deep water but many trees floating in the water. Maybe because of the recent storms?
Note that east of Devil’s Island is a huge fish sanctuary. Still many many many miles of fishing opportunities. The Federali will not be pleased to catch you fishing there!

got back from little sand bay yesterday had a great time put about 150 miles on the boat. Stayed at town of Russell campground on little sand bay. Was a little rougher than would have liked sunday but we still went out and got to sand, York and raspberry islands. Monday was our big day as we went out past raspberry around bear and devils, had lunch on rocky on a nice beach. Then motored over to Stockton Island. Around a few others from what I could tell every island has a least one beach. On our way home yesterday we stopped at a place called hidden falls creek it was 1.5 mile hike to a small but cool waterfall well worth the walk. We will be back next year hopefully with fishing gear because man did I mark fish. Thanks for the tip on place to stay.
