Anyone using the Dakota 10AH Lithium in their flasher or other unit?

Wondering if it’s worth the extra cost. Just picked up the new Helix 7 Ice and it came with a 9AH battery. I don’t mind spending the extra money if it runs the unit considerably longer and I don’t have to carry additional batteries. Also will it fit in most battery compartments that the lead acid batteries fit in?

Another option is the ampedoutdoors.com lithium battery products. They have a 12ah that is a direct replacement for the standard 9ah.

They are the same size and honestly the Lithium is well worth it.

Never heard of them. Checked out their web site and they are a bit cheaper than Dakota 10AH battery even with the charger. I wonder if there is a quality difference?

They are awesome. Way lighter and last much longer. I use it on my Lowrance Elite 5 and love it.

I started using my milwaukee battery last year with an adapter and it is amazing and a lot cheaper. I ran my Lowrance all last winter on just a M18 5.0 AH battery (which I also used to drill my holes with). I have a 9.0 AH one as well, but haven’t need it yet.

Thanks everybody I picked up the Amped Outdoors 12ah battery with charger. Considerably cheaper than the Dakota 10ah with charger.

In the reeds book, Norsk makes a 12v 15ah supposedly same dimensions as a regular vex battery for $120. Went to their website and don’t see the 15ah there. I got the Dakota lith couple years ago for the lx9 and more than doubled my runtime compared to the 5 year old 9ah regular battery I had.

You won’t be disappointed. Amped Outdoors was formally known as Energized outdoors, they just re branded this week due to trademark limitations.

I run 2 Dakota lithium 10ah in my garmin 93sv with panoptix and it runs for almost 2 days. that’s with the 9″ screen and panoptix.

The Amped Outdoors battery arrived Friday. I picked the box up from in front of the door and my first thought was they forgot to put the battery in and just sent me the charger. Battery was in there all right. Amazing how light it is for a 12AH battery. Can’t wait to use it!

Do they only charge off chargers specific to lithium batteries or will the old style charge them as well?

A regular charger will work to dump some charge into it, but you will miss out on a significant fraction of the total capacity.

I bought the charger from them as well for under $20. If you’re going to dump nearly $100 into a battery another $20 for the right charger seems wise.

Lithium needs a higher voltage than lead to take a charge. Sla charges at .75 ah, lithium chargers are 2.4 and 3 ah.

Do you need to charge the batteries every time or only when they go dead?

It’s recommended to charge after each use, but really depends on what you’re powering and how long. Draining until the cells cut-out is not advised and can be harmful to the battery. If you monitor the voltage, or run a more efficient device, multiple uses before charge is perfectly ok. The 12ah would run a vex (250mA) for about 50 hours.

Yep. Not to mention that battery status indicators don’t work on these batteries well. They show full charge right up until they die.

Those interested in going on the cheap: I use 15 and 20ah blue bricks for my gear. I have the dd-100, so dakota lithium never wowed me. I created a kayak/sled box out of a small hf “pelican” case for the 20ah so I have push button, extra chargers, and full waterproofing. Both bats load tested to their capacities, are extremely light, and run better in the cold.

Here’s my kayak/sled box in action powering my big buddy fan.

Fwiw, i think the blue brick you linked B-man is a 3 cell battery, many are. It will work, but will not be as robust as a 4 cell (like the Amped or Dakota type). IMO, for many devices, the higher operating voltage offered using 4 cells in series is a better option.

Also, the listed capacity is often the aggregate of the individual cells capacity, not the battery’s voltage basis. The same item might be listed something along the lines of 20000mah (@ 3.6-4.2volts), or 6600mah @ 10.8-12.8volts. The battery you linked is likely just under 7ah @ 12 volts?

Quality lithium cells are pretty much a commodity, in terms of energy capacity, you get what you pay for.

    It says it’s a 20ah at 10.8-12.6?

Are they being misleading about the numbers?

No, I load tested mine before using it in the kayak. The 122000 is the real deal. I get more than 2x the life of the SLA 9ah. Just buy from someone who guarantees the product as China is the land of copies/knockoffs.

I don’t see the #’s specified as being directly correlated.

There is a truth in the total value given, so not really misleading IMO. Many Lithium battery jump/boost packs are rated in the same manner.

There are no batteries or battery cells manufactured in the USA at least according to Amped Outdoors they are only assembled here. Most of the SLA 7 and 9ah batteries I’ve seen come from Vietnam and I’m guessing China is a big player of this as well. So China would be knocking off it’s own stuff. I don’t know where the technology comes from if that comes from us for it’s overseas engineers.

I’m really searching for a solution to get rid of the large M24 house battery in my wheel house. Short of pulling the battery every time I leave the wheel house and bringing it in the heated house at home and then taking it back to the wheel house every time I don’t think there is a solution. SLA batteries left in a unheated wheeled house in below zero temps just kills them. Especially if you’re letting them sit for several days or a week or more with no charger on them and you get a stretch of -20 temps you’re battery is going to freeze.

I’m wondering if a power box like what Amped Outdoors offers would work. You can get those up to 50ah. I would have to convert some wiring like the furnace fan to run off a cig light adapter but that shouldn’t be too difficult. The power box would be inside the wheel house with me and would be easy to bring back and forth. Then just run the generator when it needs charging. I might give Amped Outdoors a call and discuss this with them.

Ice Cap, I’ve had the same house battery in my shack going on six or seven seasons (agm).

Never once have I taken it out to warm up. As long as nothing is pulling a draw on it and killing it, it will not freeze.

I brought in two 55ah amped batteries for a kayaker up here. Has an electric motor mounted on his. 15 pounds a battery. He’s very happy. May be an option for you.
