I have not but it would be another one to look for. Ferns are also good to eat when picked early enough. I also like to look for wild ginseng later in the year.

I planted wild leeks in my yard two years ago and we are now able to take a small harvest.
They take a while to get established, so be lenient on small wild patches.

Geez, from the thread title, I thought we were hunting for free ramps on the St Croix. mrgreen

One guy just pm’ed me. Thought I would have a better response if I added a T to the ramps title. )

I’m spend a little time in the woods. Going to have to try it I guess.

Much easier to find and more abundant than the shrooms.

They are one of my favorite wild edibles. Favorite uses are using the greens for pesto and then the bulbs and stems either get pickled or are used to make infused oil.

    FYI on the ferns…

Not all ferns are safe to eat. The ones you are after should have a grooved stem and a brown papery husk.

The ones with the white “furry” husks are no bueno…

I have 15 acres of ramp. Covers one whole section of my woods. Calling it ramp hunting would be like calling pulling saugers out of the scour hole fishing. There is no hunt involved. Walk out and gather as much as you want.

Ramp hunting is pretty much the same as Rail hunting, isn’t it? Looks the same to me anyway. smile

how much you want? Drive your truck down and load it up. You could make some cash at the local farmer’s market.

fun fact – Chicago received its name from the dense growth of ramps near Lake Michigan and Chicago Rive. shikaakwa (chicagou) in the Miami-Illinois native language

We’ve already eaten those. In another couple days this thread will be gone because we’ll have eaten all the ramps as well.
