Anyone had surgery for “Trigger Finger?”

Having surgery on my left thumb. They made it sound like an easy/quick recovery.

But here’s my question – was thinking of going on an open water guided fishing trip down South exactly 2 weeks later. I use a baitcasting reel and I either palm or claw grip the reel with that hand and use my thumb to some degree.

Can anyone that’s had the surgery weigh in if I would be able to fish relatively pain free or would I be smarter to cancel?

My wife had the surgery a few months ago and was told she would be good to go in a couple of weeks. After a month of physical therapy she was still saying it hurt worse than before the surgery. I think a lot of it has to do with how long you’ve been suffering with it. I can say you might be able to fish but probably not pain free.

Thankfully have only had the symptoms a month and decided to have the surgery right away and not have the cortisone shot and waiting/hoping that it heals (prolonging).

You should be a candidate for a quick recovery. Surgery is always a roll of the dice.

I have had it twice. Once in a thumb and in one other finger. It is a pain and at times got quite sore. I always tried not to bend those fingers, which is also a pain. Luckily, both times, after a couple months, it just went away.

Had my thumb done a few years ago. Little or no pain and quick recovery. I’d recommend splinting the thumb to minimize movement if stitches are still in. Not very convenient, but will allow you to go on your trip.

    Frydog:

Ask your surgeon, that doesn’t mean it will be healed or painfree, but he certainly should be able to tell you whether you will damage it any further… That in my mind would be the most important part… Pain is one thing, but redamaging would be bad.

My wife’s doctor said that one of his patients ignored it for so long that he had to amputate the finger. Take away is address it early.

A couple of years ago I cut my finger off on the table saw a month before an Alaska trip. I was worried sick that it would cost me the trip. I wore a glove and got through the trip. I’ll be thinking positive thoughts for you frydog.

I smashed up my right hand in a car accident a few years ago and I couldn’t use it for a while, so I learned to use my other hand. It’s not as hard as it sounds, you should give it a try!
