Just wondering if any of you tried pulling in some sturgeon through the ice. If so were you successful? Also Did you just try your old fall spots or did you try targeting other areas? Just getting the itch to get back out and getting sick of hard water. Can’t wait for the river to open back up.

We had 17″ but I know the Croix and just because I was sitting on 17″ doesn’t mean it’s the same all over or even right next to me.

The way it is written in the books it is not legal on the croix until June this year. I was going to get on yesterday but choose not to since it is still too grey.

Next year I will be out there but I can wait. Been waiting for years another year won’t hurt.

It is a little bittersweet knowing that even more people will target them through the ice. I worry for the fish but I also know there are a lot of people who have targeted them for more than a decade through the ice. I worry about fish not being put back and gill grabbers.

I do look forward to chasing them later in the fall. Many times the bit picks up late in the year.

I agree on the handling of fish. I believe this is the only concern. Hate to see frozen fins and the old gill grab. I do believe most are good. It is the ones not educated or familiar with this issue that we hope are fast learners.
Ditto on the late season in the boat. Usually the later the better from what I have seen over the years

I wonder if there has ever been a study on the affects of frozen fins? I here about it a lot and it got me to wondering. Raising tropical fish as a kid, fins alway grow back and damage can be repaired.

That being said, I am not condoning keeping the fish out in the freezing cold longer than needed. I am just curious.

Frozen eyes… IF the fins aren’t of concern.

It is grey, has anyone contacted the dnr for further clarification? I read it as if the dates listed are added to clarify the tagging season allowed on the st croix and that pre spawn would default back to the general state season.

Read it again and saw it closes march 1st of 2016, makes sense now.

I guess the only thing grey is the way I copied and pasted it. Glad you were able to read that.

Biggill I was being kind. I did not go out because the season did not open like many assumed it would. Grey is also the fact that they have been targeted for years by catfishing. Not just a couple years but over a decade at least. Catch and release.
