Anyone ever have Ice Fishing Gear stolen while using it?

I was watching guys put out their tip-ups on a show today and they were quite far out and they went back into their portable ice shack.

I was wondering if anyone ever had fishing gear out being used and someone stole it?

That would suck and really upset me. I think thieves are one of the worst.

If we used tip-ups it would be out of a permanent shack so I could see someone stealing one when we were inside the shack.

How far away are you from the tip ups? You have to keep a watch on them anyway, so wouldn’t you see someone around them and keep a close eye on them?

I’ve never used them really before but in the video they were quite a distance away.

I think you’d see someone take them unless you were in your icehouse and had it closed.

Tip ups must be within 400 feet of the angler. That is basically the length of 1.5 football fields. I don’t know how far people usually set them but if they have any value, you might want to at least keep an eye on them.

I’ve seen guys that watch tip ups with binoc’s. My point is some guys spread them out too far.
Same guys that P&M when you drill a hole in between them.

This is the story that I have to tell again.

While fishing in our group. When this other group of four people started to move in closer and closer and closer. Two guys just cut right in between us, checking our gear and buckets. Then one guy started to yell at his other two buddies saying who never even moved through us, “Hey you forgot your rods over here.” I’ve been watching them the whole time and not even fishing. The nerve of these people. I was just waiting for him to reach in and try, as he was going to get a good kick from me with cleats on. I started to walk closer to him. He saw me and gave up. Walked away slowly and kept looking back at me.

There’s a reason why I don’t leave anything out of my shelter anymore, except for the sled, shelter bag, and shovel. Sled is usually right next to door up against shelter as sort of skirt block, or sometimes on wind side.

Use to toss fish outside of shelter, until bald eagle came and stolen them.

I set my tip ups maybe max 10 to 15 yards from my shack. If you aren’t watching your tip ups then maybe you shouldn’t be fishing with them

Agreed. Not trying to do a punt return for touchdown to run to a flag.

DNR on lotw told us 200’ was the distance or what you could realistically have clear line of site. I agree, more than about 50’ is too much. I caught a 40” pike on a tip up last year that was close to the house . He nearly spoiled 50 yards of tip up line by the time I got there.

Thanks, my previous post of 400 feet was incorrect. Its 200 feet indeed

I don’t think Wisconsin has a maximum distance on your tip ups that I could find. The only thing in the regs I found was this: ‘It is Illegal: to leave any fish line unattended except when using licensed setlines or bank poles. When fishing open water (water not covered by ice), anglers must remain within 100 yards of their line(s). Failure to immediately respond to any line (located in open water or on the ice) upon indication of a bite will be sufficient evidence that the line is unattended.’

I’ve used the beepers on my tipups in front of my cabin. My neighbor had the warden trip his flag (with beeper). He went down right away and the warden commented that they do work. He didn’t get a ticket. This was probably 10 years ago.

I’ve never had someone try to steel my tipups. They would have to have some big balls to do that. I did have a moron try taking one of my flags. He thought it was one of theirs.

I have also had snowmobiles run over my tipups on a couple occasions. They aren’t very easy to catch either. -)

I will say last year on the backwaters near the casino my buddy’s dog was having a great time getting fed hot dogs by all the kids in the tourney, and when he wandered back to the shack he had a sunfish he must have stolen off the ice! We went up and down asking different groups if they were missing one, nobody spoke up. It was pretty funny overall

I was fishing on Lake Rebbeca in Hastings back in the late ’80’s catching crappies.

Everything was so peaceful. Then a school bus pulled up and it looked like every kid in Hasting came out and was running all over the ice. Next thing I know my auger was missing.

I found it again about 100′ to the East. One of the kids used it. I laughed. hah Then went home.

Fishing on Nelson Bottoms years ago i guy told a story on how some fisherman in a shack stole a big Northern off one of his tip ups . He confronted them and turned out to be Dave Carlson (who wanted to stay out of it) and the guy who took the fish claimed he was an under sheriff. They then tried to barter with him , they would give him some large mouth bass in exchange to keep the northern ? I guess it got pretty heated but he got his fish back . Same trip watched an ultra light pilot land his plane on the ice and ran over a tip up . The owner was not happy to say the least .

Several years ago me and 3 of my buddies took snowmobiles to “Garden Island” (we didnt end up there because the dufus leading us went to the wrong waypoint). We setup and with not a soul around. Around an hour or so later some guy came riding along and started chatting with my one buddy who was sitting in his otter about 30 yards from us. Then he comes over by me and my buddy and starts chatting with us. He was a local and he asked me why I hold my rod “funny” because I palm it LOL. We were catching anything in our shack and then my buddy across from us catches a nice 18 incher and stuffs it under the snow next to him. The guy picks up my tackle box and says you should use this one. I wasnt catching anything so I switched and sure as heck I catch one right away. Then he walks back over by my other buddy and says “you should drill me a hole over here”. He asked him if he was having any luck and he said no. Right after that the fish flopped and came out of the pile. LOL
We gave him every hint that we were not interested in chit chat but he couldnt figure it out. Finally we saw some more snowmobiles going over to Garden and I said you should go and check on them to see what they are getting.

I love that. My son sleeps out on the lake the exact same way, or laying in the sled.

I had a snowmobile do a drive by once and steal a case of beer that I had sitting outside. By the time I got up and opened the door he was already driving away. monkeybutt hurt my feelings for the rest of the night… now I place things in a plastic tote outside so they are less obvious.

Probably 10-15 years ago a bunch of kids at the JC’s big ice tournament in Brainerd, a bunch generators were stolen by kids on snowmobiles. They came late when the house was dark and threw them in a pull behind sled. They did catch the kids and one even turned out to be the son of a very busy bar owner. I felt sorry for the guy, he was a friend. It was a pretty big scandal around here.

Friends last night had someone chop the lock off their trailer and steal trailer and 2 new Polaris sleds – 3 days old. Happened in Colorado Springs

Lake Manona in Madison quite a few years back. Chasing suspended perch and had my extra rod, finder, bag, and my fish next to my flip over. Was working on my last couple perch. Got them and walked back to my flip. Flip was there but everything else gone including about 22 perch. Crazy how many people were within 50 yrds of my stuff and no one saw a thing

I don’t put my tip ups farther than I can run, which at this point, is well within sight
