Anyone else not care for crankbaits due to removal

Thankfully it was a small crank. Had to teach the braid snap pull on the fly and it worked on the first pull.

I’m always kind of curious what people are doing wrong when they say the line trick doesn’t work. I’ve used it dozens of times and it’s painless.

The key is to have the line opposite the barb, and needs to be pulled at the same angle as the barb. This will release the hook.

I’ve pushed a few through out of necessity (fly fishing by myself) but wouldn’t ever do it by choice.

Apparently I need to knock on wood, because crank baits after my favorite way to fish and I’ve never gotten a hook in me.

That being said, got any instructionals for this braid line removal thing?

Fly fishing can be a fickle mistress! Especially when throwing large articulated flies.

I should clarify not all of the dozens have been on myself, saved several friends a trip to the ER and even helped a dog out once!

Now that I’m thinking about it I was throwing a 6XD deep crank in a tournament last week and a northern hit it and as I got him up to the boat he threw it right into my chest at about 90 mph. Hooked the shirt luckily and not me. I didn’t have a chance it came at me so fast! jester

Speaking of good youtube videos, there’s a local guy (Buffalo) that I’ve gotten to know a little bit from fishing who is a cameraman for Major League Fishing. The Great One Kevin VanDam snagged him in the arm with a jerkbait on a backswing and there is good video of that ordeal and getting it out. They had to get the old grizzled vet Gary Klein to get it out. Good stuff.

That is my biggest fear, getting snagged on the foreswing of a loaded rod. I can’t stand those pictures on the internet of hooked faces, eyes, etc.

I read foreswing way wrong the first time I glanced at your post….either way, getting snagged on a loaded rod would be detrimental.

50+ years and I’ve yet to have this happen. Thank God because just reading this thread turns me green. No way I’m opening one of those videos.

I want to thank all of you in advance because I’m assured to bury all 9 of three treble hooks into my hand next time I go out.

Post pics if it happens. I’d be interested. You’d have to change your name to boats&crankshateme lol

Although not immune to this, I have a few hints for lessening the chances of getting hooked.

    1. Always remove the easiest hooks first.
    2. Try to keep your hand as far away from any loose hooks as possible.
    3. Whenever possible, try to keep the hooks below your hand.
    4. Warn any other casters in the boat that their casts are getting close to your body.

My worst experience was when a 4 lb walleye flopped out of mu hand hooking me and the fish and my arm went into the water. Not much fun when the fish is trying to swim away with a hook in it and your hand.
