Anybody Throwing a Carolina Rg?

One of my new rods I’ve started using is a 7’6 MH extra fast from Tuned Up Custom Rods. I’ve been playing around with it trying to find the best applications and so far I’ve come down to topwater and texas rigging plastics on off shore structure. I just tied on a carolina rig on this rod because I think it will be perfect for dragging it around deep cover. I have never used it but have read everywhere how effective it can be in summer. I also never hear anyone throwing it here in the north hardly at all. I’m hoping that this will be a foreign look to the bass here and can’t wait to give it a shot.

Anybody throw this old school rig up here? Any tips?

I have a dedicated rod for C-Rigs and other drag-able lures. Post spawn is a good time to do this, I try to find sunken humps, deeper points, etc.

I tie about a 24-30 inch leader for C-Rigs. 1/2-3/4 oz sinker on fluoro.

I’m a broken record on this but for certain techniques like C-rigs all I use are floating plastics. The sinker drags up silt, grass, etc and if the lure doesn’t float up I think it gets overlooked many times. The floating up on the pause is usually when it gets hit.

My favorite plastics for C-rigs are BBB Flying Squirrel, Netbait T-Mac, Grandebass Rattler…

With that rod, sometimes the other thing I throw is a SK Jointed Structure Head with any creature style bait. Same drag and pause motion as a C-rig… just a different look.

Sounds like you got a great rod, have fun!

This has confirmed my suspicion that almost nobody is throwing the C rig around here. jester

Ha, its definitely old school… but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still work…

However, FFS has changed C-rigging for me – –

I still C-rig over expansive flats or points with broken rock because you can cover a lot of water. Also, the fish may not show up well on FFS if they are on the bottom amongst the rocks. Its a good way to find out if they are there.

In the old days before electronics (yes, I’m an old dog), one of the best ways to find “isolated” rock piles was to drag the C-rig until you feel them. Then throw out a marker buoy and fish it hard several times throughout the day (or until someone else sees your spot!). Now with FFS, I can find the isolated stuff pretty easily and that’s where I drag a football jig, Ned or the SK Jointed Head I mentioned above.

…further proof that I’m probably the only geriatric bass fisherman on this site that remembers ~

But that’s the exact reason I want to start using it. The bass never see it in this area.

If you’re targeting largemouth, try C-rigging that Flying Squirrel and let me know what you think. It’s such a different look when it suspends, and it works!!

I will. Right now I’m planning on using a brush hog and rage craw. Not floating but have been reading the brush hog is a top choice.

Does Fry have stock in Tackle Wharehouse? Just ordered a pack of Flying Squirrels.

Okay you smart-alecks – but if Carolina-Rigging works for you guys, don’t be surprised if your hair starts turning gray, your joints ache and you start yelling at random kids to stay off your lawn !!

My jab was a single and yours was a triple! 2 outa 3 apply to me too. Carolina keeps you in the zone when fish are down (most of the time) Attracts with the grind (weight) but the package looks soft and easy to grab.Cannot wait to try it again, my leader will be mono to keep the presentation more ‘floaty’ little more visible, not sure that will matter much 10′ down.
