I’m still trying to get these two kids their deer. Youngest had the 8 pointer he missed during youth weekend at 15 yards today and never got a shot. Didn’t listen to me when I told him to get the gun up and ready. Pretty sure I’m gonna need to buy a muzzy tag……
November 6, 2021 at 8:54 pm #2072373Shot him at 745 this morning. Figured winging it on the ground I better go

Heck yeah beautiful buck. I was supposed to work today and last minute we had a engineering issue and couldn’t demo a section of building so I was able to sneak out this morning. I have had 0 hours of research in to these woods and I walked out and set up shop in a down tree, ground hunting in Whats normaly flooded woods. he was the second buck I seen. First came about 40 minutes before shooting hour and then he came 12 yards from me at 740 so I took him.

Climbed down at 1015 (plan was to go out if afternoon with my son along to watch) and my feet no more than touched the ground and I hear deer running in the leaves. Figuring I scared a deer I didn’t know was there I look only to see a small buck come over the ridge and them this guy right behind him. He passed by the first time without a shot I was comfortable with but then stopped, turned around and came walking back, game over then for the deer.

GopherhawkPosts: 80November 8, 2021 at 8:25 am #2072542I only saw one doe for the weekend in zone 178 and I did not hear many shots. I would estimate less than 50 shots for the weekend.
AnotherFishermanPosts: 613November 8, 2021 at 9:22 am #2072555Got myself a decent buck on Saturday around noon! Chasing around a doe. It’s actually my new PB so I’ll take it!

I hunt public land 95 percent of the time

im also in 178 and also didnt hear many shots at all. We kicked up a deer on the way to a stand in the afternoon but only saw the tail. not sure if it was a buck or a doe. Sunday morning i saw a doe and a yearling but we didnt have a doe tag.

I hunted public for many years without issues. Just this weekend a coworker who hunts private had a ricochet go past her while in the stand from someone on a different property. It’s not the land that makes things unsafe it’s the hunters on the land and surrounding land.
Reef WPosts: 2818November 8, 2021 at 3:35 pm #2072665Not yet. First year deer hunting and tried out the old stand on my property over the weekend. I think it could be good but not until I do a lot of trimming back there, you can’t see anything right now.
Saturday morning before it was light enough to see 3, or maybe 2, of something walked down the trail from my left, behind the stand, and looped around the right to the front. No idea what they were because they were gone before it was light enough to see. Saturday evening I could hear one walking around in the brush but couldn’t see it. I then heard a second one coming but only saw it for a second before it was blocked also, pretty sure it was a doe.
November 8, 2021 at 3:42 pm #2072668I absolutely love to hear deer coming before seeing them. Whether subtle or with purpose it’s ultra exciting. I call it the beginning of a sound. Trying to identify the sound and what kind of animal it is based on experience is fun.

November 8, 2021 at 6:20 pm #2072700I’m VERY happy to report I finally got my neighbor in the right place at the right time to take his first deer ever. He was really excited.
He has hunted with us before at the Midwest Monster home farm and he was always in the wrong stand at the wrong time while everyone else including teenagers shot deer.
Well it was finally CB’s turn. I took him to a ground blind overlooking a Brassicas Bender plot on Saturday afternoon and got him settled in. I left and got 100 yards down the road back to camp and BANG. Finally punched his ticket. Lots of smiles after that. 1 shot with the .243 I lend to new hunters
We had another guest take a doe.
It’s really rewarding putting guests to the farm onto the deer.

November 9, 2021 at 8:58 am #2072800I got this 9 pt tonight 180 yards 12 gauge
180 yards. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever shot more then 60 or 70. Woods are to thick. Usually it’s under 20

Yeah, and he gut shot it too. But hey, deer died all the same.
November 10, 2021 at 3:12 pm #2073022got off works early so I picked up the 10 year old early from school, told him it was his day. As I shot mine Saturday. I’ve been teaching him to ground hunt and stalk with me.
He shot this guy today 45 minutes in to the woods. We spotted him about 100 yards out and mason took the shot at about 20 yards, walking right at us with his nose down. He didn’t have a clue We were there.
Mason shot my 30.06 no scope.
