I’m thinking of digging a small pond, 16th or 32nd of an acre.
I’ll talk to the DNR and get their blessing first.
I have a small waterway that is from the farmers drain tile from the north. It flows all year. The water table is approximately 3′ below grade. I have heavy clay soil so Im thinking a liner isn’t needed.
I’d like to attract woodies, frogs, maybe throw some minnows in there. Possibly some bullheads (don’t tell Iowaboy1).
    Maybe 6′ deep.
Anyone do something like that can help me from mn asking mistakes?

My advice……dig deeper. It’s amazing how much they silt in. Also stay deep to the edge, don’t taper it much. You’ll get weeds / reeds along the edges but you want the center open for the birds to get in and land. Mine was 12′ deep 25′ years ago and I doubt it’s much over 6′-8′ now.

    agree 100%

Put thought into future electrical needs if you need to add a pump.

This game acre pond was once greater than 20 feet deep. Now 12 at the deepest. There are some Kenny of natural products to se if alge becomes a problem. Additionally, some of the dyes help and aid in keeping the water cooler in the summer

I just built a new beach at this one. Btw, watch any restrictions for setbacks from any structures. FEMA required me to put in a sea wall at this house. Fortunately, their documents never said it had to be above ground, so we put it “in”
