Anybody bought/used the Gen 2 Moultrie A-5 cams?

I see these are on sale at a cheapie-cheapie price at a big box and that got me wondering.

Anybody bought/used the Gen 2 Moultrie A-5 cams? This is the G2 version that just came out this year, NOT the original A5 that used flashlight batteries and was the size of a house.

I’m sticking with higher end Bushnells for watching the deer. What I am interested in would be the possibility of using these cheaper cams for security purposes like to watch my driveway and our camp area and see who’s nosing around.

Now that we’re into October, the weekend warriors are all going to be out scouting, so I’d like to see if I have people nosing around. I’d rather risk a $59 cam than a $189 cam if someone would happen to spot it. Since these cams will be watching driveways, etc, as long as it triggers and gives a reasonable picture, I don’t really care about high performance.

    Anybody bought/used any of these?

Oh, disregard Grouse. Those pics were from last year’s model – not this year’s.

    Sorry about that…

My brother bought 2 of them, got them out last week. He says they are working good, but he’s a cam greenhorn so take it for what it is worth. Plus they have only been out for a week, so not a very good sample size.

Thanks for the reply, Loco. Yes, they put out a new version just a few months ago.

Sticker, let me know if your brother pulls the chips and the results. I know the older A-5, as Loco’s pics showed, were decent considering the price. A 5 MP cam should show what I need for security use.

The cams are on sale right now for $59 and as my access road comes in where a camera a) could be spotted and b) through an area where cattle are sometimes grazed, I’m not wanting to risk a higher $ camera.

But I’m still curious who might be snooping around. This time of year there tends to be people roaming all over and I want to nip in the bud any ideas that might be out there about strolling around on my property.

I just talked to him, the pic quality is good, the video quality is decent. Flash has good range. So far seems like an ok cam, but then again, only a week in testing

That’s good enough for me. Thanks for the reply. Won’t be shooting video anyway, just pics.

I’m going to get one and see how it works. Pretty low risk at $59, but I didn’t want to waste the time if they were a non-starter.

Keep us posted, at that price if you and my brother have decent luck I might have to grab a couple. Can never have too many cams whistling

Can never have too many cams

I was just thinking that too.

But then I also thought that it’s time to replace all the batteries that have been running all my cams all spring/summer. I found out in years past that the first cool weather snaps where the temp dips below 40 and any batteries that were 50% or below just go flat dead in one night. Since I’ve been running 4 cams since May, it’s time.

But the funny thing is finding yourself going around the woods with a case of batteries strapped to the back of your ATV. Adding a camera will mean that I’m up to needing 40 AA batteries just to fill all the cams once.

Rechargeables aren’t really an option as it would be too much messing around with batteries in / batteries out.

And yet I’m still having trouble resisting adding just one more cam…
