Any musicians among us?

I play drums. I play and enjoy pretty much all types of music. I also have an unending respect for guitarists and pianists, because my simple mind just cannot grasp chords, note sequences, scales, and basically all of music theory. I just hit hollow cans. Who among us is a musician, or at least a music enthusiast in general?

I used to play drums as well. I think in a lot of ways unless you’ve played drums they’re just sort of an afterthought in songs, whereas I really appreciate a good drummer. I mainly love real, redneck hick country as well as very heavy metal (I know, same genres) and I love how the modern heavy rock scene is big on double bass drums. I really like listening to Five Finger Death Punch, whose drummer rocks the double bass a lot. I’ve also always enjoyed listening to the drums of Def Leppard because their drummer obviously lost his arm in an accident, so although their drum parts may not be the best ever, they’re unique because their drummer has one arm.

Oh also, I should add that when it comes to country, I’m a huge sucker for a good fiddle/violin and steel guitar. Which sucks because modern country just really doesn’t include those. I absolutely love hearing them. I also like hearing a good saloon piano sound, such as in Brooks and Dunn, Travis Tritt, or Mark Chestnutt songs.

I love all types of music but I cant play a note on anything.
I do however like writing parodies.
example the song Claire de lune would be rewritten as clear da saloon.

I’ve been playing guitar for almost 20 years. Mostly metal (Lamb of God, Devil Driver, Dethklok type stuff). I also enjoy the occasional acoustic jam. I’ll listen to anything except 99% of all country. I do like Brad Paisley and the best country song ever……. fishin in the dark by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I don’t play any country music because it’s mostly torture but their are a few pretty good ones. Classical is always in good taste too. It goes very well with metal.

I also like to make beats and techno grooves on my computer with some midi controllers. EDM stuff is pretty fun to make especially if you’re into sub bass.

    I’m not a drummer but I can count to 4 so I’m already over qualified……. ;)

My father was an extremely talented musician. He belongs in the concertina hall of fame ( yes there is such a thing! ). He could play multiple instruments, including guitar, accordion and basically any instrument he was interested in. He led his own polka band, albums, arranged songs etc.

I didnt get one ounce of his musical talent. But I do enjoy listening to it. And always wanted to learn guitar but never took the time.

Fast forward to my daughter. She plays guitar and writes her own music and has a great singing voice. She even has a few songs that get played on the Eau Claire college radio station. I guess certain things skip a generation!

We had a concertina in the family that was passed down. I wonder where it ended up. My dad used to pull it out and play it at gatherings.

I used to play guitar. My dream was to have a house with a studio for a hobby.

As a kid I had a 4 track, drum machine and a couple guitars. I used to make original music all the time.

I loved the bass and love songs with a good bass riff playing behind it. For my music I used an octavator on my electric guitar to replicate a bass.

I just started taking the acoustic out, oddly enough, the last few weeks. It’s going to be a while before I can play “Over the Hills and Far Away” again.

I took piano lessons when I was a kid. Between Hockey, automotive repair, and defending my honor, my poor old hands are no longer capable of that dexterity.

I’ve been listening to Blues since I was a kid and especially liked the sound of a harmonica. Three years ago I finally bought one and started to work on it. I’ve been watching videos and playing along as best I can. I now own four different keys and can actually make a little music. Or it’s just an optimistic imagination LOL.

My mom sold my dads two concertina’s and she got nearly 10k for his #1. That was under value by at least 5k but its tough to find concertina players these days. Kind of a dying breed. My dad wanted them played after he was gone…

I have played in bands for 45 years, mostly bass guitar, but I also play rythmn guitar and ukulele (in a uke band) Notice please I did not say professionally, just enough to get gas money for my boat. My roots are in classic country, but I also love 50s 60s and 70s rock, can’t beat those oldies.(yes that was a pun for drummers)

I play drums, started out playing piano, parents are professional musicians so it was in the blood. I’m glad they started me that way as you grasp everything musical so much easier when you have learned it on piano first. Played drums in a couple bands in high school and college that played around town. All of us had kids and grew up….now I fish and have a wife and kid. Classic low level rock story. rotflol

Steve I always wanted to be able to play harmonica. Always thought it was so cool that a little tiny piece of wood and metal could make such a powerful sound. Bought a Blues Harp Hohner a while back and got frustrated and never got good at it. Wonder if I still have it somewhere.

It’s been an interesting experience. Basically to play “blue” notes on a harmonica, you have to make it play notes that it wasn’t designed to play in the first place. It’s called “bending” and it takes a while to get a handle on it. Sometimes I do it pretty well, and a lot of times I don’t. grin

Some would say the down beat on the drums would start the set.

Me I was on the trombone, and played the drums as well.
My wife is the real musician in our family. She says she does not have a perfect ear for tone but she is not much off. She played Pomp and Circumstance for her kindergarten graduation. Her parents bought her a brand new piano that we still have today. My wife took piano lessons from a college teacher since she was 5 years old till we graduated from high school. At that time she had a memorized 18 piece retrapra for recitals that she did receiving her honors.

I on the other hand have no idea what in the “ell” it took to get there.

Man, I want to reply to almost every post individually, but just can’t! I, also am a metal head. But also can’t go wrong with Alan Jackson. Steel guitar melts my soul. Thanks to everyone who responded; maybe we’ll get together and set some hooks or jam!

PS: wanna make the Mille lacs GTG this year, as I was bummed I couldn’t make it last year. Things are messy right now but I might be able to pull it off. Hope everybody has their floating ice suit ready…

Nah there are a few of us around.

I played Viola and Violin for 10 years, played guitar for about 15 years. Wound up selling everything when money was tight some time ago, made me sad to sell those classic Marshall and Fender amps. Also sold my collection of Jackson Randy Rhoads guitars.
Earlier this year I picked up a guitar again and hope to maybe make some noise this winter in my down time.

Used to play mostly metal and hard rock (Metallica, Megadeth, Ozzy, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, Helmet, Tool, Soundgarden, White Zombie, Prong, Machine Head) and some classic rock as well.

Havent played in long enough time that it sucks having to re-learn all over again.

I think there are more metal heads on here than we might think. Bullet for my valentine, Metallica, slipknot, mudvayne are some of my favorites.

I grew up on Metallica and grunge and it never left me. Not an ounce of musical talent in my body though.

I grew up playing guitar and bass. Mostly with a few buddies in the garage. And a wide range from Hendrix, Metallica, rage, and then a bunch of punk rock. Rancid , black flag, blink , old green day, but it’s probably been 10 years or better since I’ve touched a instrument

Nothing wrong with staying with the classics like Little Walter, Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson…
