Any Lake Superior ice

A crack has opened up between the ice that formed Sunday/Monday and the ice that formed Wednesday-ish. There is still a shack dangerously close to open water right now as you can barely see from this pic. The 10 mph west winds in the forecast might be enough to break the ice sheet from shore and send it sailing towards Canada. Be safe out there everyone! From the looks of it, that shack is close enough to the open water that he could be casting into it.

There were 5 shacks out at 2:30 when I left work.
The one in your picture was joined by another close by…..both about 20 yards from wide open water. The other three were closer in to shore, but it was still wide open right off of 21st.
    Wow, just wow.

The weather is trending warmer and more windy for the next 10 days. Even reaching 40+. Not good. I’m not confident we’ll see good ice for at least 2 weeks.

If I was a betting man I’d bet that little sliver in Duluth won’t make it past next weekend. Hell, I’d be surprised if it makes it past Wednesday. I hope nobody is on it when it sets sail.

There were shacks fishing that little sliver all weekend (about a dozen houses at noon on Sunday) and there were 6 houses set up this morning. Haven’t heard if they’re catching anything, that area isn’t really considered a “hot” area to fish.

I really hope people aren’t out there today. Here’s a pic from the beach showing a crack opening up. That ice is going to be on the move very soon. If anyone is on the ice they’ll never know.

Everything south of the entry broke off. Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s still folks on the sliver at 17th tho.

Do you have a link to that cam? I like that one best.

There were still a couple shacks out there an hour or two ago and still at least one out right now that I can see. Its looking pretty dicey – you can see whitecaps starting to build from the south. Hopefully everyone gets off ASAP.

Looks like the remaining ice is setting sail as I write this.

There were still a couple people out there about an hour ago. Hopefully they got off and aren’t trolling right now.

Yikes, hopefully they left! Takes some serious stones to be out there in 45 degrees when that ice expands with a wind gusting over 20mph from the southwest.

There are a few Darwin award winners out there right now in front of 17th ave east. There is a guy who is literally less than 10 ft from the edge of open water and another guy right next to him. Also 2 shacks out there. The ice looks sketchier than ice typically does in early April and we’ve got a pretty decent NW wind which is perfect for sending that little sliver of ice away from shore. Some people wont learn until they go for a swim.

I don’t know how that ice can support someone with balls that size…

I think the weight is offset by the lack of a brain in his head.

I really wish I was able to judge ice thickness from sitting at my computer. Care to share your secrets?

Went to run an errand over lunch, and saw 3 guys sitting on buckets out from what would be about 19th Ave East fishing. Most of the ice on this end is chunks of broken up ice thats frozen together, but there is a relatively flat sheet in the area that they are fishing.
Short lived most likely, as its supposed to be mid/upper 30’s by Sunday and sunny.

There was one shack and a couple guys out fishing last night after work and there were 3 shacks out there this morning.

The ice is in pretty rough shape with the 50mph winds we had Monday and strong winds on Tuesday but we have had some pretty cold overnight lows this last week. Be safe out there!

I just took a peek at the canal cam in Duluth and the ice breaker is seen in the distance after having cleared the harbor. On the Two Harbors camera there’s also a lot of open water and someone launched a rig thru the shale ice and went out.
