Theres currently ice out past 21st and a little ways further than that. It doesn’t help with the ship traffic still coming and going for a little while longer.
This is by far the most ice I can ever recall seeing in December.

What exactly are you catching? Crossing my fingers this yr. For some coho through the ice.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559January 31, 2018 at 12:29 pm #1748753It looks like the main lake is open today. I see the boat launch in Two Harbors is still bound up in ice but there’s blue water not far from the end of the breakwater now.

January 31, 2018 at 12:47 pm #1748759When I came in this morning at 8, there was actually a nice flat sheet of ice off of 21st St. I couldnt see any open water going up the off-ramp.
Problem is we have some pretty stiff west winds blowing right now up on top of the hill. Not sure if that has/will blow it out today or not.
If it holds, the temps the next 6 days look good for making ice.January 31, 2018 at 12:59 pm #1748762When I came in this morning at 8, there was actually a nice flat sheet of ice off of 21st St. I couldnt see any open water going up the off-ramp.

Gitchi GummiPosts: 3021January 31, 2018 at 1:00 pm #1748763The ice out to 21st Ave is still holding as we speak as I look out from my work building downtown although there appears to be a crack right in the middle. Based on the wind forecast the next 24 hours, I think it will blow out tonight. The ice north and east of 21st has already blown out.
Most people seem to think temps are the main factor in weather or not LS gets ice…. I think its definitely more about the wind than any other factor.
January 31, 2018 at 5:17 pm #1748832At 3 it was pretty much gone. Open water along the shore with a mile long piece offshore about a half mile. That should be somewhere on the south shore by now

Yep! Couldn’t believe it happened so quickly! As I was leaving work around 4, there wasn’t any ice left close to shore. It was hard to tell but when I got downtown this morning, it almost looked like a new sheet of skim ice had formed overnight. Hard to tell if it was really skim ice or just sea smoke.

February 2, 2018 at 1:58 pm #1749394Up to debate if the “best” places on Chequamegon bay are within walking distance, but a short walk can get you out on some good spots. Specifically Bono Creek, Onion/Souix, Houghton Pt, etc. Other good spots would be quite the hike by foot and require a quad or sled (and good ice conditions)
February 2, 2018 at 5:45 pm #1749452Quite a bit of ice being made on the lake today. Just too much wind. The good news is that it keeps suckig more and more energy from the lake making it easier and easier to make ice.

February 4, 2018 at 9:40 am #1749666Well boys, this is it. It’s going to start this week. I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t people fishing on the ice today or tomorrow. Today is going to be windy but the next 5 days is relatively calm and cold.
February 4, 2018 at 3:40 pm #1749737Not so fast. Looks like the wind had her way with the ice.
