Any ideas if this is a mountain lion?

This was taken this fall in the vicinity of St. Francis, MN. I’m looking at the size of it and I can’t believe it’s a bobcat. I know the picture quality isn’t the best, but look at the size of the legs and body. I don’t see a typical lion tail, but not sure if that’s because of the quality of the image or not. Size wise, looks to me it would dwarf my 60lb Drahthaar.

    I change my vote.

    It’s a green sunfish. 100% sure. I would know.

If that were on my cam, I would not take much of a second look…..bobcat in my eyes…..

I would guess the height of the grass in the foreground just to the cats left is about 12 – 16 inches tall. I’ve never heard of a bobcat that big. I don’t see a tail (bobcat), has a short neck (bobcat), but appears to be WAY too big for a bobcat. I also don’t see much for the typical bobcat spots either.

Well, you asked for ideas and had a pretty unanimous consensus(minus the green sunfish vote…lol.).

Seems you had your mind convinced already.

A mountain lion would be much longer and less blocky plus it would have a very long noticeable tail when walking like this critter is.

    It’s a bobcat.

A mountain lion has a tail that’s more than half it’s total body length.

Also, use the length of the head from nose to ear to estimate the distance from shoulder to hip. It’s way too short to be a mountain lion.

That or it’s the even-more-elusive hose cat.

Bobcat IMO. I circled the keys for my statement, notice pattering on inside of front leg as well as no discernable tail. If a tail was present it would show up, mt lions have rather long tails.

Set up a couple more cameras and put the neighbors cat in a cage for bait.

I bet your Draht would love to take a go at that cat. Ive got one too. Fierce dogs when it comes to varmints.

No way id let mine go after a cat. A coyote wouldnt worry me too much but not a cat.

I’d say its either a lynx or a bobcat. Lynx are pretty rare but I got a daylight picture of one when I was bear hunting a few years back up by sandstone.
