Fingers crossed after today it freezes quick. I booked a day trip with Hawthorne for 12/17 a couple months back and I’m begin to think it may get canceled.
Cove, Wahkon, Twin Bays, & Sunset Bay are all reporting 4-5″ of ice from what I read last night. The lake is ready to freeze, but we really need some cold weather with no wind..
Macs said on facebook they would be letting people walk out this weekend in the bay. 4-4.25 inches everywhere they checked
I fished 7 inches today on a good-sized lake in the boundary waters area
Twin Pine Webcam this afternoon. Open water/slush right up to the shore.
Me thinks there will be more than a couple people taking a swim this weekend.

I’m hoping the lake caps over tonight with teens for temperatures and 1mph wind. With the temps coming, if it can stay capped over for 24hrs well be in good shape by Christmas. I hope…
This article is on the back of the sports page in the star tribune today. The dude caught two 50+ pounders 20 minutes apart on the day before Thanksgiving.

Looks like the west and north side finally locked up. Can anyone confirm?

I’m looking out my window right now and can confirm…NO, it has not locked up yet. Still seeing plenty of open water.

Not sure what you are hoping for, obviously there’s already areas of the lake that have fishable ice.
Now if you’re hoping to drive a wheelhouse out to the flats by Christmas, that’s not looking very likely.
My cabin is on the westside by Terrys. Just hoping to be able to fish closer to shore on some of the points. possibly with a wheeler.
North shore looks promising….. worth a phone call to see if there checking ice conditions yet.
Pic of Red Door Web Cam currently
Wigwam had about a dozen portables as I drove by last night around 5pm. Open water is starting to slush up.
1 degree this morning in Garrison. Probably locked up last night.
I spoke to Garrison Sports & The Red Door this afternoon …they are both optimistic with allowing walkable access this weekend.

Close…but no cigar. The dark areas in these pics I just took are open water pockets. Ice is still moving too, not locked up.
Andy where were those pics taken from?
Nichols Point…NW corner.
Looking straight out is right between the two Myr Mar reefs.
FWIW, although I quit making predictions I’ll go out on a limb here and guess those open water pockets will be iced over by tomorrow morning. Sure hope it lasts this time.

I hope you didn’t jinx it, Andy!
Portables out late last week on Wahkon.
I’d say 6 over the weekend & looks like Beachside is out spudding and marking as I peck away.
I looked at the webcam at my house to check on the ice and saw the portable out in front. Looks to be in 7-8′ of water about 30 yards offshore. This is the east side just south of the liberty beach access.
Steve from Johnsons Portside put up an ice report vid on FB. He is predicting to see a lot of ATV’s running the south and east side of the lake this weekend. Making ice quick with no snow!

Check Garrison Sports, Pretty sure I saw a FB post that they are allowing foot traffic starting this weekend. Double check with them to be sure before heading up.

If anyone is considering the upper west side and North shore, definitely check with resorts Friday.
Both Red Door and Tutt’s (which is under new ownership…good) posted today ice conditions.
Both reported similar conditions.
Here’s what happened, shore ice was established but with Sunday’s strong winds it broke the ice sheet and pushed it off to the east opening portions of the lake back open. Those open areas are now back ice covered, however…inshore ice is 5-7″ but once you get to the new ice it drops to 1.5″. You cannot get out very far before you reach that new ice.
However, for those still wishing to come there’s plenty of fishable areas on the south and east sides.
Yes sir! Be safe and check with the resorts before heading out as I recommended above!
I took this off BookFace.
“Hey everyone I’m going to give a brief ice report for mille lacs. From garrison sports to pikes point there’s 5 to 7 inches of ice out to the the first ice heave then 2 to 3 at the heave. Pikes point to indian point has 3 to 4 inches in areas I checked and found spots with less then 3 inches and some spots with up to 5 inches. Didn’t check ice from Indian point to cove. But then cove, wahkon, and isle bay has 5 to 8 inches. Now from isle to malmo there’s anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of ice. With some spots less then 4 and even less then 3! There is cracks and heaves you have to be careful around and be careful where there’s snow. I found spots under snow with as little as 2 inches. Now from malmo to garrison sports ice is all over the place from open water to 4 inches with most being less then 3 inches. Now I didn’t check every inch of ice on the lake so if you come out fishing use common sense and check your ice as you go and practice the buddy system! Remember no ice is safe ice! All spots I checked were from today 12/16/2020 Tight lines, be safe and happy fishing.”
I personally have not been out & with this mornings heavy winds out of the south, it could really move the ice around. As said above, I’d check with resorts before venturing out. They have all been out checking the ice daily. Be safe folks & tight lines!
