I admit, I’ve never cooked a squash in my life. I dont particularly like them but ive had some covered in brown sugar and butter that taste ok (obviously). I bought one at the store the other day and figured I’d give it a try as a side dish. Anyone have any must try recipes? It’s a butternut squash

I couldn’t stand squash as a kid.
Now it’s like eating candy.
I started out by cutting them in half putting some butter salt pepper and brown sugar on them and put them on the grill. Now I stuffing with sausage and rutabagas you name it SkyZlimitNovember 1, 2022 at 6:56 pm #2156433Maple syrup is also a good addition.
I’ve had it with goulash baked in the center as well.
Butternut, buttercup and acorn all taste great!

I think I’ll try this EPG. I like cooking veggies on the grill. If it doesn’t turn out I’ll try Glenn’s method

November 1, 2022 at 8:46 pm #2156467Half butternut and salt and pepper, bake until until done. Dice up an onion and bacon and tender bacon and sauté onions with bacon. Scoop out the squash and mix in with the sautéed bacon and onions, season with pepper, salt, and brown sugar to liking, it’s good.
November 1, 2022 at 8:58 pm #2156474Cook it anyway you like and then slide it into the trash bin. Absolutely disgusting. I gave some to my son to try telling him it was good. He almost gagged. So the hate of squash must be in our genes.

For those that don’t like it, is it the flavor or the texture that bothers you. I know a lot of people who say they don’t like things and its more the texture that bothers them than the Taste.
As far a recipes go there are just so many. Most of the time I just cut in half, scoop out the guts, bake in the over until done, add butter, Salt & pepper. I may sometimes add a little brown sugar.
I will say there are many types of squash and they all have a different flavor. My two favorites are the Butter Cup ( Not butter nut ) and the Delicata.

November 2, 2022 at 12:48 pm #2156634Good squash is like candy to me now. I just hate how long it takes to cook.
We have one on the counter now that I will probably cook tonight thanks to this post!November 2, 2022 at 1:10 pm #2156638Cube enough of any fall squash to cover a 9 x 13 lubed pyrex pan. Bake that covered at 375 for 30 minutes.
While that’s baking mix 1 1/2 cups brown sugar with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour then cut in 3/4 of a stick of butter. Add 1 cup chopped pecans and mix.
Take the squash out of the oven and spread the crumble mix over the top. Bake another 30 to 35 minutes uncovered.
I use the same crumble for sweet potatoes. When we get together with my wife’s family for fall or winter holidays, they always request my sweet potatoes or squash.November 2, 2022 at 1:17 pm #2156642While that’s baking mix 1 1/2 cups brown sugar with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour then cut in 3/4 of a stick of butter. I mean at that point is it still a squash? Loading it up with sugars, flour, pecans, and butter is clearly going to make it taste better. Do you want to taste the squash or all that other stuff? You could probably coat a rotten pumpkin with all that stuff and make it edible.

It’s pretty much like apple crisp with squash instead of apples.
