Another Wacky Worm Question

I didn’t want to hijack the thread regarding hooks. How are you guys fishing this rig? I just bought a bunch of different hooks and worms in the hope of getting my dad a nice smallie this weekend, he can’t throw crankbaits all day. Do you just let it sit/slow retrieve?
    Thanks…

I use the Northland tackle red weighed hooks, cast it out, let it sit, then shake it back 4-6 ft. Repeat

I have had great luck with VMC Wacky Hooks in size 1, black nickel color. These hooks have a wide gap to allow more hook to be exposed therefore allowing for easier hook sets in my opinion. If fishing deep water, greater than 10 feet, I like to add a split ring to the worm to help sink the worm a little quicker. The twitching done by the fisherman is what drives the bass nuts. So slow is key I assume. Are you fishing them just off of bottom? I’ll obviously experiment and tinker, just looking for a starting point. My cabin is on a very good smallie lake and I want to start enjoying them more, they’re a blast to catch!

Yup…..drop it in the water next to the boat and shake it, do a little experimenting to see how it moves. It doesn’t take much to get that back-and-forth thing going. Sometimes a few shakes and then a long pause works well, they hit it as it’s slowly sinking back to the bottom. Worst idea I ever had was tying one of these things onto my wife’s line. Now I spend all my time helping land her fish and hardly get to do anything myself!

Sounds good Rootski! I’ve heard great things about them. Being busy landing fish is a great problem!

Well I got out last weekend and on literally my fifth cast or so with the wacky worm I got a healthy 19″er! Talk about building confidence! We ended up boating four more that evening and had a blast!
Thanks again for all the tips! We were in 18-22′ and casting and reeling very slowly with long pauses. I’m hooked!

I have also had good luck drop shotting wacky worms. I usually lighten up on the drop shot weight (1/8 or 3/32 oz) to slow the fall a little. I then use a Gamakatsu 1/0 or 2/0 drop shot hook. I get bit about half the time during the fall.

Try this when fishing the rip-rap of pool 4 with one line and cast the other. Waldo seems to enjoy popping the worms at times too.

Thanks Todd, been up to Nevis at all?

we made it up over Memorial weekend, then again for a short weekend in mid July. Our summer has been crazy busy, but at least most of it has been fishing:)…..
