Another Rod Case question

I know the big negative with the Otter rod cases is most reels dont fit in them and you have to break down the reel handle to get it to fit in the otter case. Is that the case with the Frabill case also? Or is there more room for the reels in the Frabill case?

I own the Otter case, I never break down my reels, they fit just fine, that’s what the thick cushion is for..

Honestly, how much time does it really take to fold the handle on 3-4 rods? 1 minute?

I only problem I had with that style of case was taking rods out with 2 people in a clam type portable. You will have to barrow you buddy’s lap to get rods in and out. I normally bring 6+ rods pre-tied with the lures I wanted to try for that outing. Switching rods can get annoying quickly.

Not really the question I was asking. But I will entertain it nonetheless. I look at having to break down my reel each time I put it in the case as a hassle – especially when you spend north of $100 on said case. Time is money… and hassles waste time. 1 min X twice per spot (coming and going) X approx 5 spots per outing X several outings per week X several weeks per season = a lot of time spent monkeying with your reels if you ask me. Doing quick and conservative math, that adds up to around 2.5-3 hours in a single ice season of messing with your reels. Not to mention its usually in the elements because I’m usually hole hopping.

Back to my question – I’m curious if the frabill cases have more room and dont require breaking down the reel.

I don’t break the reels down in my frabill. I found I can get eight combos nicely in one if you cut an opening big enough for the reels to fit. They come with a second layer of foam beneath to do this very thing.

Thanks for sharing Munchy. I like how there is an additional layer of foam so you can custom cut openings for the reels. I didn’t know that was an option – thanks.

What is the third, smaller cut out for on the middle/right side?

the heavy duty frabill case can even fit inline reels with out the need to take the handles off. fit 8 in mine pretty easily

I just got one of these. Same concept, but fraction of the cost. It will only fit 4 combos though. I tore out some of the egg crate looking material where the rods sit to make them fit better. I screwed it to the rear storage trunk on my atv and seems to work great. Only time will tell once I’m on the ice.

Similar question for the Expedition Ice Rod case… how do reels fit in that guy?
