Lake Independence Boat Access Closure Update
October 24, 2014
The District intends to extend the closure of the Lake Independence boat access in Baker Park Reserve into early November to conduct a more aggressive treatment for zebra mussels in that area. Three chemical treatments have been conducted within the barrier surrounding the access area since October 6. Results have been mixed, due primarily to restrictions on the dose of chemical that can be applied under the current product label.
The Minnesota DNR expects to obtain a variance to this restriction that will allow us to treat more frequently and at higher doses inside the curtained off area, subject to certain monitoring requirements. Those applications could start as early as Thursday October 30, and we would need to keep the barrier in place for up to a week after the start of the treatment sequence to achieve maximum effectiveness. Ideally, the boat access would be re-opened no later than the week of November 10. We ask for your patience as we test this new zebra mussel control strategy on Lake Independence.
Wow, three treatments already.

Tell me about it, the lake I normally fish (Christmas Lake) has been closed since August. These treatments are a waste of money. The boat inspections are inadequate and that is the real root of the problem.
Treating for Zebra mussels when there isn’t a good way to stop them from getting spread back into the lake again is like running an engine without ever changing the oil… It’s not cost effective since you end up replacing the engine every 10,000 miles when it blows up instead of just doing the maintenance and have it last for 200,000 miles.
Buzz put out the 35% compliance on another thread, and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. By the time everyone complies, which will take multiple generations, it is to late, and even then its impossible to stop.
There is a tipping point to all aspects in life, and zeebs are at that point in most all the more popular bigger bodies of water its going to spread like wildfire to every other.
Not to say there still shouldn’t be laws to take weeds off and pull plugs, easy peasy stuff everyone can handle. But the treatments, inspections, etc is overboard.
I’d be willing to bet the lake association will pull all the strings they can to keep that access closed next summer.
