Anglers avoiding Mille Lacs in record numbers

Article by: DOUG SMITH , Star Tribune
    Updated: July 9, 2014 – 9:29 AM

Something’s missing this season on Lake Mille Lacs, one of the state’s most popular fishing destinations.

    Anglers.

Fishing pressure in June — as measured in the number of hours anglers fished — was the lowest on record, according to Department of Natural Resources creel surveys of anglers. Surveyors tallied about 165,000 hours of fishing last month, nearly half as much as last June.

Not surprisingly, June’s walleye harvest was a record low, too.

Eric Jensen, DNR large lake specialist for Mille Lacs, said he believes a slow bite caused by a plethora of small perch for walleyes to munch is the main reason for the absence of anglers.

“There’s an abundance of natural bait out there, and then it’s oftentimes hard to get fish to bite on something on a hook,’’ he said. “With social media, it doesn’t take long for the word to get out about a hot bite or a slow bite.’’

The Mille Lacs walleye regulations are the same as last year — anglers can keep two walleyes between 18 and 20 inches, with one longer than 28 inches, with a two-fish bag limit. But new this year is a ban on night fishing.

Kathy Lundeen, who, with her husband Bill, owns Lundeen’s Tackle Castle near Onamia, has seen the effects of the reduced fishing pressure.

“There just aren’t the fishermen here,’’ she said. “It’s not just the [slow] bite. I think people don’t want the controversy. They have heard there’s a night ban, the fishing is a little tougher, so they’re not going to come. But the fish are out there.’’

This despite the presence of big walleyes in the lake, as well as numerous smallmouth bass and northerns. Anglers caught and released 112,000 pounds of walleyes in May and June.

And more anglers appear to be showing up to fish for smallies.

“I would say we’re seeing more bass anglers,’’ Lundeen said.

They released 134,000 pounds of smallmouth bass and kept only 5,000 pounds since the fishing opener.

The DNR boosted bag limits for bass to six and extended the season, and increased the northern bag limit to 10 fish, with one longer than 30 inches.

But can bass anglers replace the missing walleye anglers — long the bread-and-butter for Mille Lacs businesses?

“It’s the million-dollar question,’’ Lundeen said.

Meanwhile, with the record-low fishing pressure, the walleye harvest, too, has been tiny, with only 10,000 pounds of walleyes killed so far this year. The state’s allocation is 42,900 pounds.

The fear going into the season was that the DNR might have to impose catch-and-release-only fishing if it appeared anglers would exceed the walleye quota.

“At this point, it doesn’t appear we would exceed the quota,’’ Jensen said.

I’ve always been curious how they come up with the data that tells X number of pounds caught and released. I’ve spent a lot of time on Mille Lacs, and I’ve never been asked how many I caught or released. Their numbers are pure speculation. Either way, the policies for Mille Lacs have really hurt the lake. It’s not that the fish aren’t biting. You hardly even mark fish out there this yer.

Brilliant!!!! The DNR finally figured out what is wrong with Mille Lacs. Too many perch and the internet! Good Lord, what next…..

Funny thing is, over the last 3 years I can count on one hand how many perch I have caught. None this year. Zero, nada, not one. And I spend a fair amount of time pulling live crawler harnesses that typically get chowed even by tiny perch. Just don’t see where they are getting their info.

The reason for the slow bite is due to the fact the walleye population is completely decimated by tribal netting. Yet the DNR won’t even put that topic on the table for discussion. We are all doomed.

Completely agree. Just not marking much of anything out there.

My guess would be the constant negative news stories like this one.

Is it fair to blame the DNR? After all shouldn’t we be blaming the “dart board” on the wall of the DNR offices? There absolutely should be a sliver stating it’s the DNR’s lack of management that’s to blame. Also a sliver mentioning the nets. Heck there should be a sliver blaming global warming.

Is there any reason Mother Nature and the Anglers should be taking 100% of the blame?

When will they just admit they messed up and move forward?

I’m sure that hasn’t helped. I can’t comment on the lake, but fishing pressure on the river is way down this year as well. All weather related.

Negative news stories for the river to Brian. Its been a ghost town up here on pool 2. Marinas look to be maybe %25 full. Can count on one hand the number of fishing boats Ive seen out this summer. Little eerie cruising around with the entire river to yourself but Ill take it. Im sure many folks up on Mille Lacs feel the same way.

    ^ That’s exactly what I’m talking about.

I was listening to the news stories about the flooded golf courses this morning…

Well there’s plenty of marinas, bait shops, resorts and guides that were hit hard by the ultra cold winter then get backhanded by this years high water that had a grip on the state. Toss in the poor fishing on Mille Lacs and there’s 1000s of people hurting.

Golf courses should be made into low income housing. <coffee>

The number of fish in the lake is way down, period. I have 15 days on Mille Lacs this year and I am not marking anywhere near the fish I used to. There was a 2-3 week period where certain mud flats were loaded with fish and the fishing was great. At the same time, flats near it would have no fish. Usually when the fish are on the flats, I can mark some fish on every flat. My last trip out I graphed a half dozen flats and marked 1 or 2 on every flat. I trolled the basin over a 4 by 4 mile area and never did run into a true school of fish. We did find some fish willing to bite, but the numbers were way down from years past. Right now there is a ton of small perch in the 2″ range. Add in the late bug hatches, and fishing is getting tougher.

There are fish to be caught and I’m sure there are still some great days of fishing ahead, but it’s clear that the Walleye population is not what it once was.

If it is any indication… our group rented a launch out of Hunters last saturday as we do every year… fished from 1pm-5pm like we always do. 28 lines in the water for 4 hours… 4 walleyes caught, 10″, 17″, 19 1/4″ (keeper) and a 26″. Typically, we boat anywhere from 30-50 fish….. damn perch….. (

After reading This I just might have to skip tonights planned trip.

But being A “cidiot” I plan on heading up and spending some cash in the local economy anyways.

After enjoying the benefits of the Lake for the past decades, I just can’t resit going somewhere else.

Lesson Learned; “fishing is less than stellar”,local watering hole establishment customer service was down right cold.
The latter is hard to understand?

Just spending Friday night poring through some of the archives. Came across this one, almost two years ago. Interesting reading through this thread. Just how much has changed in just a couple years. Some for the better, some for the worse. All in perspective, the sky still hasn’t fallen! smirk

And yet this statement still holds true. I’ve never seen one positive story sent to the local media.

I’m not one of those DNR bashers but the way they’ve handled this lake both in every facet is simply amazing.

My experience on the Pond this year has been just the opposite of most of these posts.
Been catching lots of eyes and consistently graphing fish.

IMO people are tired of the BS plain and simple, too much negativity, too much cost, too much too worry about in the way of boating and fishing laws, too much blame game around Lake Mille Lacs..I personally WILL NOT be going to Mille Lacs until they get their act together, raise the limits, loosen the slots and tell the fishing Nazis to go away, (and by the way I used to fish it at least a dozen times a year) I am more then willing to travel and spend my money else where, plenty of lakes to fish….way to go State of Minnesota and business owners..(insert slow clap)

If they would stock it with catfish I would go up there and wet a line.
