An actual fishing related question

    Yes it’s true.

I’m toying with the idea of keeping my ProV but I troll a lot. I would need to get a kicker to go along with the 300 Verado. I’m thinking a 15 hp for the additional charging ability over the 9.9 and also I like to speed troll at 3-5 mph. My question is, does anybody run one of the speed control systems out there? I don’t even know the name of them but I know Jon Thielen of Destination Fish runs one of them. Is there pro’s or cons to either system?

On a related topic does anybody know if The Boat Center sells and installs either? I’ll check with Dean but thought maybe somebody had one done with them.

Thanks for any thoughts and recommendations. applause

You have a Pro V with a 300?! And here I thought you were a simple humble man.

Very simple minded and a stumble, bumble, humble type of guy.

I set my kicker rpm and let the terrova manage steering and small speed adjustments. No troll gadgets needed.

No need for a 15. 9.9 is plenty.
You can do what Dave says or there is the itroll or trollmaster. Similar products to adjust speed.
    Currently run an itroll.
    I think Thielen runs trollmaster.

Is this technically your first fishing post?

Might be the first non-trolling, i’ll leave that up to others to decide.

I run the itroll. Good is I find it certainly better than relying solely on kicker throttle because of the greatly enhanced fine adjustments. Bad is that it (and trollmaster too, I believe) is simply a throttle position adjustment system. I would certainly think somebody will come out with a system linking throttle control system to GPS and allow the throttle to be speed over ground controlled like all the electric trolling motors. As mentioned, it is possible to combine the trolling motor and the kicker to use the trolling motor for speed control, but this can be a challenging balancing act when mother nature throws curve balls at you.

I do this also. When you say 15hp for more charging. If you mean for battery charging. I believe the 9.9 will have the same electrical system as the 15. I fished with an early Trollmaster. I didn’t care for it. They may have refined them more by now.

Best thing about itroll or similar products is the hunt mode. Randomly adjusts RPM/speed. Triggers a lot of bites. Tested with and without and hunt mode catches more fish

Most engine manufactures 9.9, 15 and 20 are the same motor, down to the carb.

Basically all they change is the CDI and normally restrict the air intake on the carb to reduce HP.

The charging system will typically remain the same. Just a note, these small kickers do output some juice, but you’re only talking a few amps. I get it though, it’s better than nothing.

yes and no, the 9.9 carb has a smaller alternator. The EFI models in 9.9 versus 15 are the same. As long as you are referring to the PRO KICKER models. Regular 9.9 and 15 outboards are again a different set of specs.

The specs I posted are funny? Why? They came copy and paste from the Merc web page.

Lets keep this one pinned near the top. That way those doubters know that indeed know that Dutchboy does own a boat and does post fishing related topics jester

Unsure what you mean by ” pinned his thread to the top”? Every time I view the forum a different thread is “at the top”. When I got on just now this thread was 6 places down. How does a thread get pinned to stay at the top?

The only way I know of to keep a post near the top is for it to have the most recent replies

The blue marks with pins. This was pinned for a hour this morning. Happened to be right at the time you posted Dave. Your screen shot isn’t in the right area. Once you click in to one of those forums you will find pins. A mod has to do it I would imagine. Maybe why Brian said it was a slow morning for him. Poking fun at Dutch actually posting something fishing related.

Thanks for the explanation, I rarely go to an individual forum. Everything of current interest is right there under “todays topics”. Learn something new everyday.

Actually I was interested in learning about these systems. However I thought there would be more guys running them.

On the install I am sure RBC installs fairly easy instal to DYI…any other questions fire away I run this set up on my 20.5ft fiberglass boat and troll a fair amount for walleye and salmon.

    Thank you.
As I mentioned I like to troll fast..4-5 mph isn’t abnormal. Will it run that fast or are they more for dialing slow speeds?

I wouldn’t say it’s normal but they can easily do that. Muskie guys do it all the time. Late summer I get around 4 for walleyes.
It is for dialing to a certain speed doesn’t matter what speed.
When hooked up you can use either the remote or the regular speed control on motor. Either tiller handle or forward controls.
