The revival of the safe thread got me wondering what everyone does for ammo storage? Any cool hacks or build outs to keep your ammo organized and stored well? The top of my safe is getting rather full and I’d like to have a better system, theoretically. whistling

Only one way, that is to get out and shoot to make room.

I just use those green ammo boxes. One for shotgun shells, 1 for rifle ammo and stored in a closet. I don’t have kids around anymore and guns are in a safe in a different room.

In the factory boxes when applicable, on shelves indoors.

Bulk, loose pack is stored in surplus cans I buy from sportsman’s guide. Target Reloads stored the same way, more specialty reloads stores in MTM boxes.

Same. Except I need a lot more, 20 gauge and 12 gauge in slugs/steel/lead, then a variety of rifle calibers etc. Just wondering if there is a better option than stacking green ammo cannisters to the ceiling.

I keep them in the factory boxes as well and have dedicated drawer(s) in the dresser for them. Can store a lot of ammo this way.

My ammo is scattered all over the downstairs but all in the original boxes. Guns are all locked away. My house is a disaster I need to purge a lot of stuff. Thankfully I have all week of next week and I can get going on that.

I have a Stack On cabinet, not fire proof, but secure. I also use the ammo boxes inside of it… mostly for the .223 ammo and .22

I dont insist on locking it up like my firearms so I have unlimited space for ammo.

Well I do have some plastic storage things I use when I go hunting, but in the house I dont use anything special I just keep it separate from magazines and the guns. I dont have any room. Maybe something like a locking filing cabinet would work?

Empty out half of the closet stuffed with 5000 rolls of toilet paper and stack the boxes in there.

He had to get rid of all that in order to make room for all the freezers for the local grown meat he is buying.

For every safe full of guns you should have a safe full of ammo.

Basement shelves, closets, garage cabinets, kitchen counter (wife’s favorite), under seats in the truck, and in various pockets of jackets and vests covers most of it I think whistling

Built closet shelves just for ammo. It’s senseless to take up safe space with ammo. What a waste of a safe.

    I use plastic ammo crates.

Designed for ammo storage, but perfect for storing shooting, hunting or survival gear. Two extra strong handles make it easy to carry up to 85 pounds of gear. Designed to be stacked high, using molded-in stacking ridges. Four tie down points for ATV attachment. Features MTM’s tongue and groove O-Ring seal system for a water-resistant dry storage.

Double padlock tabs along with two strong latches make these ammo crates the perfect solution for many storage needs. Made in the USA, with high-impact polypropylene plastic.

    Dimensions: Exterior 19” x 15.75” x 8”(H) Interior 14” x 13.5” x 7.25”(H)

I had to buy two chest freezers to store venison and half cows I buy every year from my neighbor… Is this not a good thing?

Agreed. If someone is in my ammo room, or worse in my safe, they’ve either been invited or we’re already in more trouble than I another safe would help solve

yes, that is normal. 37 bags of frozen peas is not however.

I built a 12′ by 16′ room with monitored security. Besides ammo, serves as a walk in safe. When we are working up loads or setting up scopes/DOPE its common for buddies to lock their rifles in there when they leave for a few days.

Years ago I found this nifty metal storage cabinet. It’s about 3 ft wide 7 ft High, shelves, etc and it’s perfect for storing ammo and reloading components.

I reload all rifle and handgun ammunition so I have a vast array of plastic cases and ammo boxes. In my opinion the key with reloading is everything has to be labeled clearly and accurately. All of my rifles have individualized ammo made specifically for them. So everything has to be kept very organized.

Now all of this organization lasted only until my two kids started shooting trap. Then suddenly there are cases upon cases of trap ammo stacked everywhere. This stuff is heavy so it doesn’t exactly make sense to put it on shelves. I could just build a stack of it in the basement but then of course it has to be all carried down there. And back up again. Currently there is a stack in my office and I’m using it as a printer stand.

    Grouse,

You’re onto something. Only when the structures are actually made out of ammo will our stockpiles be considered “almost enough”
