S&P 500 down indicates to me… small business should be realizing some gain. Poor Blackrock…
“What an embarrassing time to be an American. Starting trade wars with some of our own biggest allies.. threatening to invade countries… siding with Putin/Russia… That last one should bother everyone with more than 2 braincells.”
We here in Canada can put up with trade wars , tariffs and the like – whatever – business.
However – Trumps threats to Take Over Canada and Greenland, Trump Says: “By any means necessary” – Really ??
WOW – and Americans are OK with this ??? Really ???
Americans are OK with going to war and attacking other Free nations so they can have more “RAW Minerals” as Trump calls them – energy ???
I’m not sure if Americans are embarrassed by this, but I am embarrassed for them.
Really Kinda surprised more Americans are not objecting to America siding with North Korea and Russia against the rest of the free world – definitely not my (or most Canadians) view of American’s stand on freedom.
THE UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY:
“UNGA members backed the European resolution by 93 votes but, extraordinarily, the US did not abstain but actually voted against it, along with Russia, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 other states, with 65 abstentions.”
Wow – America – no longer the leaders of the free world – now siding and voting with the Dictators of the world – I guess that is Trumps long term goal.
First Trump puts his Judges and Generals in place, then removes any democrats from government jobs, then start to muzzle media, then the arrests will start for any of his opponents.
Good Luck to our American friends and family – I think you have a dangerous future ahead with Trump taking control as a dictatorship.

Thanks, we will see how it all goes.

Just checked my 401k and it’s still up for the year, although I didn’t look into the last month. I’m ok with some purchasing discounts since retirement is still a long ways away. The S&P 500 had an incredible year last year but no one wants to talk about that. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is down 4% YTD.
The Dow had ~35% growth from the January of 2021- January 2025. It also did well from January 2017-2021 in DT’s first term despite the Covid mess.
I’m showing about 0.6% growth so far in 2025 as we near the end of Quarter 1.
It’s completely a long play unless you’re seeking retirement in the next 5 years or so, but again this isn’t quite the level of “Winning” we were told was on the horizon. I felt a hell of a lot better in March of 2017 than I do now in March of 2025 about the economy. At our most recent semi-annual meeting with our financial advisor, we elected to dial back the risks we were taking in a few of our accounts per his advice until the turbid waters become more clear. Regardless of political affiliations, hopefully for everyone’s sake we see more stability and slow steady growth after a rough month.

You really need to quit listening to your liberal press/News Outlets. I have heard that it is worse then the US news networks. I think we will be in much better shape in 4 years and I know it can’t be worse then the Biden Administration.
Wall Street always over reacts.
There have been plenty of dips in the S&P since it started. With the latest in 2023.
Markets going down isn’t nearly a bad thing if you dollar cost average like I do and with my side investments as well as everyone’s 401K.
If you have a good broad portfolio the losses will be minimal.
For the most part the biggest earners are the ones that stay in the market.
Bottom line when markets are down I am buying.

Lets see. Since the war with Ukraine and Russia started the US tax payers have given 66.5 Billion $’s to Ukraine and your country has given 3.2 Billion $’s How about you and your county make up the difference and I’ll gladly listen to your thoughts on the subject. I have a hard time seeing how giving such large amounts to Ukraine can be seen siding with Russia.
We didn’t get to the poor situation we are in quickly, and we are not going to get out of it quickly. As long as I can see things turning in the right direction, I can live with it taking time. “There is only one way to eat a whole elephant: one bite at a time.”

There’s many ways to eat an elephant. If you want it done quickly I recommend inviting the whole village regardless of political affiliation to a BBQ.

I’m fine with that. I’ll attend, How about you????

There was a recent Presidential address to Congress that all were invited to attend. Seemed to me there was some that were not real happy to be there, A few walked out early and one even had to be escorted out early.
2 months in and people are not seeing the results !! WOW !! I guess you cannot see the Billion$ of waste already cut. They are really gnawing on that Elephant with Doge
Pretty rich for a Canadian to be calling Trump a dictator, after he already served 1 term and had fantastic results until the plandemic. (yes it was planned)
Meanwhile Trudeau was freezing working Canadians bank accounts because they protested… OK.. well listen to you !!!!
As far as Americans fishing Canada goes. Every year they have been willing to accept my money and I’ve been willing to give them it. If any of that changes this year I’ll have to rethink it come next year.
We do need obnoxious anti outdoorsman types like you on this site
Wow…sounds like you are the most intelligent person in the world (NOT)….This country is a melting pot….not run by the thought process of one party or type of person because they think they are always right…..
REELPRO
Alpha News or even FOX should give you a better perspective.
Most of us with even one brain cell know what is going on is not the end of the world as you describe it.
it is VERY much like US looks our for US first – THEN we can help the rest of the world.
THe loony lib leaders of canada and UK are leading their countries to the brink, not the other way around.
LOTS of intersecting points and views but I am tired of us spending OUR money on everyone else. Billions around the globe, soldiers, hardware….
About time we looked at our own backyard as the most important place to us.

Huh?
The S & P did real well in 2023.
For someone such as myself that was scolded awhile back for starting a political thread we seem to have come full circle with some doosies as of late.

For the year yes it returned 24.23% which is very good But there was a dip from July 30th till about October 20th.
July 4536.34
October 4117.37
There was an even bigger dip from December of 21 till September of 22.
Bottom line the dips are not all bad. It had went on to set new highs after that. It will do it again.
I have roughly half my portfolio in the S&P 500. I am not worried. I always buy the morning it raises after being down. Multiple days down I just hang on till I see the numbers going up. That way I can take advantage of every dip that there is.
Not sure if it affects anyone specifically here but Ontario is going to place a 25% charge on your electric bill starting today which will add approximately $100 on your monthly bill.
I’m probably far enough south where no electricity I need originates in Ontario. Apparently it could affect up to 1.5 million in Minnesota, Michigan, and New York. My thoughts are that it would be individuals or populations near the Canadian border.
I read that most of the “energy” Canada sends to the 3 states goes unused… unless it is -20F or 85+’ so…. poor timing for that !
Lol poor timing indeed
I’m just wondering if there’s any truth to this or not…
The 25% charge on electricty won’t impact much until peak season this summer. Hopefully this tit for tat crap is done before then. The surge capacity of the Lake Erie Loop could be put to the test then if not.
The bigger issue is if this just leads to them slapping a simlar charge on the 4-5 million barrels of crude oil per day coming from Canada to the US. That’d add pressure the wrong way to our already rising inflation for 2025.
I do think it’s interesting now that Trump is the one doing the tariff’s everyone is up in arms and debating it, meanwhile there is an endless amount of pre-existing tariffs coming and going to countries all across the world that no one talks about or even mentions now that it’s a hot topic. Same would apply to subsidies, which is basically a cousin of tariffs. C’mon all the new Laissez Faire Austrian Economists on the left, let’s go Free Trade!!! Oh wait, that’s not it at all is it?
For someone such as myself that was scolded awhile back for starting a political thread we seem to have come full circle with some doosies as of late.
As long as people stay away from Calling people names or threating them, things tend to go on for awhile. Other than some some Americans being told they have less than 2 brain cells everyone has been good so far.
Not a Liberal – we will soon be able to vote in a Conservative Government here in Canada – Some of what Trump is doing is great, but some is just plain wrong.
We also need to cut back our bloated government – YES
We also need to get rid of the BS WOKE crap – YES
We need to control how and where our foreign aid is spent – YES
We also need to promote business interests over government – YES
BUT
We DO need to stand by our allies – YES
We DO NOT need to attack, or even threaten an attack, on any other free nation – NO
We do not need to blackmail other free countries that are under attack, for a payment or for their resources – NO
We do not need to vote with Russia or North Korea against any other free nation. – NO
Conservative – YES
Attack our neighbors – NO – Stop all Oil, gas, and hydro to USA – cause massive economic hardship to USA – NO
Yes some of what Trump is doing will maybe make America great again
Some of what he is doing may destroy any greatness America may have had.

Well said. There are a number of countries that impose tariffs on us.
The US, EU and Canada imposed tariffs on China’s EV’s in 2024. Now China has responded to Canadian tariffs with up to 100% tariffs on Canola, Pork and other foods.
Heck it’s hard to even do a google search on Tariffs with out getting 100 reports on Trumps tariffs first.
Reelpro, the difference is.. America has been paying to secure all our Allies basically by ourselves. If Trump doesn’t stop Putin from overtaking Ukraine, is Canada going to ? Be my guest.
Fine, if we have to be the word police, then so be it, but we shouldn’t have to pay for it all too. Ukraine had no problem taking our dollars to fund its defense and now that Trump wants some collateral (other nations have secured loans) for the monies, “He is blackmailing & taking their natural resources” Be my guest, take over on the World stage, its getting hard to hold up most of the world.
We DO NOT need to attack, or even threaten an attack, on any other free nation – NO
I have not seen or heard this anywhere, can you link Trump threatening attacking an ally or free nation? One of his biggest positives is being the most anti-war president of my life. The Canada and Greenland stuff has all been economic centric from what I’ve seen, no offense but if we wanted to do it militarly it’d already be over.
The thing about Canada and defense they have it made.
They only have to spend 1.5% of their GDP and can get away with it.
Simply put the US would never allow a foreign adversary to get a foot hold on either one of our borders.
As an American it does suck to have to pay the bill for 3 countries defense not to mention Europe as well.
The Canadian tariffs are a direct result of border security and Canada doing their part with stopping the fentanyl.
The US has SOF units on the ground in Mexico as we speak dealing with the cartels. Does Canada want this? I bet not.
