Amazon Fraud

To make a short story long, I encountered my first fraudulent experience with Amazon today.

On Saturday I ordered a new Garmin 942XS GPSMap unit for my boat ($1,300+ tax). It showed up today as promised……or so I thought.

I opened the brown Amazon box, and found a shiny Garmin box with the factory seal.

Like a kid at Christmas, I slowly cut the seal on the Garmin box and opened it…….

My first impression was that the unit seemed kind of small, about the same size as my 7″ Garmins. The 9″ GPSMap unit is advertised to be compact, but immediately I knew something was amiss.

I flipped the unit over to see that it was a USED 741XS

No factory cling tape….. wrong model…..water spots…..and even some saltwater corrosion. WTF

I immediately called Amazon, who after hearing my complaint immediately issued a return label and will have a new unit out tomorrow.

They were easy to deal with, despite the questionable situation.

My only hope is that their fraud investigation team can find who returned the unit originally and did the bait and switch to get a newer, bigger unit.

The douche bag even pulled the serial number tag off the new unit and put it on the old one.

I’ve already emailed Garmin about the “stolen” unit, and gave them the serial number off it. My only hope is that it will at some point be returned or registered and they can catch the guy.

Grrrrrr……some people’s kids should be taken out back and beat

Got scammed once as well. Amazon “suggests” purchasing Prime products only.

That said, just like you, everything was taken care of. The sellers also DONT get your credit card number so that’s good too.

That’s the kicker, it was Prime and bought from Amazon themselves, not a third party seller.

Amazon doesn’t know what’s in the box they got from Garmin with the “factory seal” on it. They just ship by what the outside of the box says. It’s not an “AMAZON FRAUD” as your post title says. To be fair, you should edit your post title. Do I have to chase you all over the internet? smirk

    CLICK BAIT!!! jester

Honestly this is the very reason I purchase big ticket items through Amazon. If there is any issue whatsoever they will make it right, every, single, time. Other places it is hit or miss if you get someone having a good or bad day, or just not knowing company policy.

Since yesterday was Left Handers Day….

FRAUD: wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

It could be considered Amazon Fraud by just applying a little left handed thinking. Amazon was the victim of fraud…Hence “Amazon Fraud”.

I was just informed of by my Left Handed Favorite Wife.

Pretty good idea. I mean the guy is unlikely to be prosecuted or anything.

Amazing there are people like this. The world owes you nothing, buy what you can afford. I bet the guy can’t stand theives either.

For every instance this has happened, half of the people thought they got better end of the deal and kept it

I hear of new scams every day. Wish there was a way to bring honesty back into the world. I am glad to hear that Amazon was willing to fix the problem. I have only ever had one time where Amazon has not fixed a problem. I bought something 6 months before xmas because it was a great deal for my wife. Once she opened it, we found ourselves in the same spot. But it was too late and too much time had passed to get the problem fixed. Now I open everything up all the way and reseal it if it is a gift.

On a side note B-man, there are plenty of other places to order those 942’s from where you don’t pay sales tax and it is cheaper then retail.

Anything boat stuff, I never get off Amazon as their not the cheapest less reputable in the boating business, in my opinion.

I made a few calls and did some searching before buying from Amazon.

I wanted to buy one locally, but I couldn’t find one in the entire state……

The best price I found was at Capra’s, but they estimated it would take two weeks to get.

West Marine didn’t have one locally either, and said it would take a week and a half.

I have a 6 day trip coming up on Lake Superior and wanted to get it installed next weekend, otherwise I would have gone through Capra’s.

Remember, there is a difference between “sold by amazon” and “fulfilled by amazon”. Sold by means amazon is the seller. Fulfilled by means amazon handles the transaction regardless of the seller. Two very different things that can be easily overlooked (my wife does it all the time).

I’m not saying this is the case but a lot of prime items are fulfilled by amazon but are also still sold under 3rd party sellers. I’m going to assume that this is what happened (I know what they say about “assuming” lol). I try to only purchase amazon items that are sold by AND fulfilled by amazon to minimize any transaction issues.

I’m glad amazon is taking care of your issues. Another great reason to only buy “fulfilled by Amazon” products.

If it was fulfilled by and sold by amazon, it may have been a return item that someone kept the original item and returned a different model in the same packaging. Free upgrade for them. Package sealing items are readily available most anywhere these days and it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what happened either. Some people are just crooks.

I’ve heard of people buying expensive smaller items and receiving “factory sealed” packages with rocks or other weights in them to simulate product weight. Like I said, some people are just crooks and I’m glad it’s being taken care of.

Sorry to hear about the mixup. Heading up to IR on Friday myself.

I hope this negative thread doesn’t singlehandedly take down Amazon. coffee

I Think the Amazon Prime is becoming a joke. “Free two day shipping” and I get items listed as prime in 6 to 10 days.

You can thank the immense amount of unemployment being spent all summer coupled with pandemic guidelines early last spring/summer. Simple logistics mixed with an influx of national spending will do that to shipping times. It will even out eventually. It hasn’t changed my view on my prime membership. Especially considering that when the town I live in doesn’t carry anything I want or need to purchase, Amazon is a huge bonus. I don’t live in the boonies, my town just blows. Given the way logistics works, I’m surprised it isn’t a two week wait. Amazon truly has astounding logistics.

Having said that, Amazon has always been good to me if there were ever an issue. Sure, you might get an uptight service rep once in a while but keep going up the ladder. Their bigger customer service representative deserve company commendations in my opinion. Every issue I’ve ever had, which isn’t many, has always been satisfactorily resolved.

I just ordered a Triton oscillating spindle sander for the guitar I’m building. They sent me the wrong item. But, it was the upgraded model (oscillating belt sander). Needless to say, I didn’t complain about that one.

Just as a side bar, we are in Covid chaos with a lot of products with ties to outdoor recreation. By total chance I did an interior paint job over the last two days and the lady was working from home. It didn’t take long and with the tidbits of conversation I overheard, Helix, Ulterra, Fortex, ect, I realized the calls she was taking were Humminbird and Minnkota items. A little chit chat later found out she is Johnson Outdoors dealer customer support. Her biggest client is Bass Pro. Bottom line is everything is on back order. Demand has skyrocketed creating shortage all along the supply chain. Some large retail outlets have standing orders to send whatever you got as soon as you get it, it’s that competitive for product between the retailers. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

My only problem with Amazon sellers is “Floating” an order. Claiming to have an item in stock and/or stating the item has shipped when in fact they don’t have that item on hand.

Never had a problem cancelling the order and getting a quick refund.

My 15 year old son ordered an ethernet cable off amazon with a gift card he received for christmas. He ordered the wrong one with the wrong plug on the end and requested an RMA. He received one and I brought the package to the UPS store and generated a return label for it. Searching on the Amazon RMA tracking site the RMA number returns no results so he is out whatever he paid for it. I have heard all the same stories of bait and switch as was initially reported in this request. Ive read they dont even look at what’s returned and only put it in the appropriate “bin”, returned due to defective or return due to dont want it type of deal and the latter is what likely happened to the OP.

ONLY and I mean ONLY order a product if it’s a PRIME product. It’s always free returns, no questions asked.
