    Our cabin is on 3 acres of which it has a township, gravel road that divides it.

    My question is can I carry a loaded handgun across the road without a conceal and carry permit or am I breaking the law if I do.

    At night when I walk the dogs I want to be protected from wolves.

    You likely would be in more trouble for shooting a wolf than a person.

    As you can tell i don’t have a answer to your question.

    When I was trapping years ago I was told I could carry a loaded handgun as long as nothing was covering my holster in any way that could conceal it from view.

    I think as long as it’s not concealed you are fine.

    You can legally carry that, just has to be out side of your clothing and not concealed in any manner

    Your fine as long as its not concealed. However NEVER carry a full can of Spam and wear cowboy boots and or a urban sombrero at the same time.

    Maybe I wasn’t paying attenion in my permit to carry class, but MN is a “permit to carry” state, not a “concealed carry” state. My understanding is that you need a permit to carry regardless of whether you are concealing or not. I believe that you would not need a permit to carry if openly carrying while hunting, but I think you would require a permit to carry for walking your dogs.

    Of course, I would not trust any advice given here in regards to doing something that could get you into considerable hot water.

    When is a permit to carry not required?
    A permit to carry is not required of a person: (Minnesota Statute 624.714 Subd. 9)
    *To keep or carry about the person’s place of business, dwelling house, premises or on land possessed by the person a pistol;
    *To carry a pistol from a place of purchase to the person’s dwelling house or place of business, or from the person’s dwelling house or place of business to or from a place where repairing is done, to have the pistol repaired;
    *To carry a pistol between the person’s dwelling house and place of business;
    *To carry a pistol in the woods or fields or upon the waters of this state for the purpose of hunting or of target shooting in a safe area;
    *To transport a pistol in a motor vehicle, snowmobile or boat if the pistol is unloaded, contained in a closed and fastened case, gun box, or securely tied package.

    Now that I reread you question, you’re carrying on your land but just crossing a road with the pistol, correct? Hmmm…

    Not a lawyer but I’m almost 100% sure Ralph is right. The road is public, you will need a PTC to cross with a holstered firearm. Will you ever get flack for crossing a road to access the rest of your land on the other side while carrying a holstered firearm without a PTC? Not likely…

    Agreed there, but a PTC is cheaper than dealing with a headache that could arise.

    That is correct. Like Eagle said probably never an issue, but I wouldn’t want to shoot a wolf across the road and call a CO to have them ask me how I got the pistol across the road.

    LOL don’t shoot ACROSS the road. )

    Get the permit to carry. Classes run from $65 to $150. plus the $75. paid to the county and it’s good for 5 years.

    We need a permit to carry concealed or not (off of our own property) in MN.

    PS Spam won’t help you here I’m afraid.

    Do what I do. Just yesterday I ran my dog in wolf country to practice on grouse. Plenty of wolf tracks. I carry a rifle because a pistol would be about useless to accurately defend my dog at any distance. You know those scary assault machine guns everyone is afraid of? Demonized by the media? Come to find out they are ideal for this situation. Small, very light weight, carry a lot of ammo, super accurate and powerful enough for the job. Throw on a sling and you are in business.
    Some like the one I use even come with a carry handle. Imagine that.

    Put the holster on your dog… Boom.

    Don’t see any laws where dogs cannot carry )
