Transom Saver?

How do you guys feel about a transom savor on a Alumacraft Dominater 175CS with a 115hp Mercury? The dealer said I would not need one. The only other two large motor boats I have been around had one. Looking for a second opinion.
    Thanks Dream’n

I’ve never heard of, owned, or seen a boat with a motor from 60 hp on up that did not have one. That said, I certainly have not seen everything. Did he recommend a Wedge or one of the other support systems? I would have one if I were you to protect the transom and tilt and trim pump/motor.

I had a transom saver on my old rig that had a 40hp. There is no way I would not have one on my current rig and my dealer was happy that I asked for one before he recommended it. Better safe than sorry in the long run. Why would the dealer not recommend a saver? Did he provide a solid reason but since you are second guessing the dealer, I guess he did not, go with your gut.

Think of it as a small investment.

You will definitely want to purchase one, this will keep all the stress off of your transom while the boat is being trailered. The cost for one is pretty inexpensive and it will also give you peace of mind. Good luck Fishing.

I have to disagree, and I know we have had this conversation many times here. In the end do what makes you feel comfortable, but having a thin wall piece of metal holding up a 1500 lb motor does not give me any piece of mind. The torque of the motor running is putting way more stress on the transom than when trailering.

I have a 200hp Evinrude and have never used one. The new Skeeters all come with the wedge and most other new boats have something similar.

Personal opinion is the transom saver has some good marketing, and lots of people think it will work. If it makes you feel better go for it, but I don’t think it will do anything.

I thought it was more to support your hydraulic trim unit?

That would be the reason I’d want one

90 horse motor, 12 years old, well over 10,000 miles trailered. I use one. Never any issues with hydraulics or transom

    Cheap insurance indeed
No need to put anymore stress on the transome than needed
Bumpy roads and watching my big motor in the back bounce around is an uncomfortable sight to see

1500 lbs no wonder those evenrudes are so slow. a transom saver should easily support 1000 lbs which is about twice the weight of most large outboards. Even if they only handled a little weight wouldn’t a little protection be better then none and its not so much the weight as it is to stop the bouncing. They’re cheap, I would never go without one.

I had a new 2002 Alumacraft trophy with a a 115. The dealer say no need for a transom saver. I had a separation on one side of thr transom and Alumacraft warranted it, very good about it. They also told me at the factory to use a transom saver. End of story

My dad has about the same setup, and has a transom saver..

The only argument against the transom saver that I have ever heard is that if your boat isn’t strapped down tight to the trailer, the transom saver will actually put stress on the transom when the boat bounces around. This is not something I agree with.
