Here’s my Terrova 80# with 60″ shaft on the new Nav 165T, including stabilizer made by RAM. I also have the cam style quick mount plate..very nice mount.

Does your 165 have a large down slopeing bow cap?

I’m not entirely sure why a stabilizer is a good choice. It would seem to me that a stabilizer just prevents the shaft from acting as a shock absorber. If you have ever watched that thing bounce around while running through waves, the shaft absorbs everything. If you are worried about stowing the motor when traveling, just move the shaft ajdustor down to the base and tighten her up. Just my .02…

I understand your reasoning, but I have also seen a trolling motor head get smashed from bouncing in waves. The head plastic shattered and wrecked an entire weekend of fishing.
Ever since I saw that, I use one.

The bow cap is not sloping but flat and approximately parallel with the boat floor.
The clips that hold the cable to the shaft are from Home Depot, come in 3 or 4 sizes. I believe these are the 2nd smallest size and fit perfectly to keep the cable from flopping around.
The stabilizer is actually home made from Ram products. It is a long double socket and a short double socket, with a double ball holding them together. If I would have bought the real stabilizer from Ram it would have been the long one but I had these parts in my spare box so just used them.

The thought of the jar that occurs when the head is fixed solid causes me some concern. I use a rubber bungie cord on mine. It not only slows the bounce, but eliminates the “whip” of the shaft when either on the trailer or on the water. So far, so good- -jerr
