F50 Prop

Getting a feel of my new classic 165 with a yamaha F50. with an average load with a 10 5/8 x 12 pitch aluminum prop I run 5400 rpm wide open at about 29 miles per hour. Does the diameter of the prop matter or just the pitch? I am going to stainless. If I drop to a 11 pitch will I lose top end speed and gain rpm? Should I stay with the 12 or go to an 11 with the switch to stainless?

Generally, you’d want to drop in pitch with SS, but I don’t know if that applies to lower HP motors as much as the big dogs. And diameter doesn’t matter a whole heckuva lot (within reason). An inch or so difference won’t really change things much, as long as it fits.

I’ve read over and over the worst thing to do is overprop a 4stroke.

I’d take a run with a fully loaded boat and a few buddies along and see what your max rpm is then?

I have the same prop. I think it is 10-5/8×12-g or similar model name and I picked a few extras up cheap on the ebay a couple of years ago. I like the way it jumps on plane and couple more top end rpm don’t really matter, I cruise around at like 4-5k 99% of the time.
