Almost had a serious accident duck hunting

I’ll make a long story short. We almost had a serious accident duck hunting this morning. What we later found out is that I either lost or forgot to put a pin back in my bolt when I cleaned my gun last. When I went to shoot this morning, the shell basically exploded in the open chamber because the bolt malfunctioned. This caused pieces of the brass to blow apart and eject out the side. My buddy took a piece of it to his rib cage. LUCKILY he only has a small cut to show for it. Some how it went right past the guys head right next to me and hit the second guy over. SCARY stuff. I will post a few pictures of the shell in a bit. They are on my phone.

And now to the hunting. We had to break ice to get out, sorry @jnelson grin . We then had to break ice to put the decoys out. Every once in a while a sheet of ice would come through and try to take the dekes. We only saw a few ducks but a ton of geese. We are headed back out with more goose floaters, leaving all the diver dekes and mojos home and going to hammer the geese. They are feeding in a nearby field now and went back to this lake last night.

    Just curious…
Did the ammo happen to be Winchester purchased at Walmart?

No, it was Kent. I have two of the same gun and after comparing the two bolts I saw that I lost a small pin somewhere.

What kind of gun and what pin should we be watching out for?

    My thoughts exactly.

Glad you and your party are OK, DT. Not a good situation, it will be helpful to all to know what was misplaced as I’m sure this is something we’d all benefit from knowing how to avoid.

Mine was a Stoeger but I believe Benelli would have the same pin. I can take a picture later but will try to describe it. When the bolt is out of the gun, on what I would call the back side of the bolt there is a small pin below the hole where the bolt handle goes. Like I said I will post a picture later.

Glad all are ok! Was it an auto or pump? I’ve had my Benelli Nova apart 100’s of times and can’t think of the pin you are describing.
