Well we have ice! As of yesterday most of the lakes in the area were froze over, but with the strong winds over night I was a little worried how they were going to hold up. This morning I went on a little drive to see how things looked.

Some of the deeper/bigger lakes did blow open but a fair number of smaller lakes look like the attached pic. Mostly iced over with a few holes of open water scattered across the lake. If the wind stays down it shouldn’t be long and we’ll have safe ice in no time

I’m sure some will be on the north bay of Reno today.

Most of the smaller, shallower lakes froze over about a week ago and most of the larger lakes locked up during the Thanksgiving cold snap. I’ve been checking the ice conditions on a number of lakes and I’ve found anywhere from 4”-6” of solid clear ice. The ice that formed early last week had just a light covering of snow. This made it very easy to see when each body of water froze.

As for this current storm, it looks like we are going to luck out and only get a couple inches of blowing snow. Granted this won’t help the lakes make ice, but I don’t think it’s going to hurt it too much either.

    Good Luck!

Hey Darryl – welcome to IDO. How’s the fishing been for you? I just got back from Lake of the Woods where the bite was pretty darn good.

the fishing has been good but not the greatest. i have caught walleyes ranging from 16″-22″ and some northerns, crappies but no sunfish i think i might have to move around pelican lake a little more and try to find the sunnies.

IF they don’t come to you… some times a guy just has to go hunt them down.

Welcome to the site Darryl! I haven’t been up to Pelican for quite some time, but I hear the fishing can be pretty great. Good luck on the sunfish and let us know how you do
