The family and I went up to Pelican lake near Ashby this weekend as we have our trailer at Indian Mounds Resort. I started Thursday as the wife cound’nt get out of town till Sat. Started out casting for a few northern and was almost immediatly set up with a northern. Black and orange spinner baits were HOT!!! Also caught a few of the green fish….Yes,Bass! I caught 2 in the 3.5-4# range and many others. Although it was fun, Anybody can catch those! (Right Tyler?)I was having a little trouble finding the Walleyes, So I started asking around….5-6 FOW i was told! But I’m marking a ton in 16-18′! So…Sat. afternoon I set out with my Nephew Jake and tried where the old timer started and after an hour of nothing, I spotted a group of boat’s where I heard the old timer mummble…..Something about a boat landing…. Well…I decided to make the jaunt across the lake and try it. When I arrived, There were about 10 boats trolling along. Some using daredevils and some using crankbaits. I set up with a spinner with a crawler harness in about 5′-6′ of water. Did’nt take long and I was up on Jake 3-0! Then I let him reel one in and it was game on! He was right on my heels when we quit for the day. We had 5 in the box,Put 2 fish over 20″ back and 5 came unbuttoned before we got them the boat. This was in about an hour! Well,Jake and I went back out in the wind this AM and he had just snapped his bail closed and he had a fish on before he could get it into the Folbe! A boxer! Then we made another pass and his Rod was doing the “fish on” dance..After a breif struggle it came off . I turned around and my Perigrine 5′ rod was do it also! I got mine in..A really nice 22.5″er. To make a long story short, We had 5 more today and kept 2, Let 2 go that were over my 20″ slot and had 3 more come unbuttoned. That wind was fierce!!!! Had to wait till the fish was boatside before I could let go of the wheel to net it. Was a good 3′ rollers and wind gusting to around 20-30MPH.
Next weekend it’s the sunfish and Crappies that i will give a go at. They were justing to get into the bays. Had a water temp in the bays of around 64 degrees and 60 degrees on the main lake.
