The crappie bite is at its peak right now! There are literally a dozen lakes kicking out nice crappies right now. I’m sure there’s more than that, it’s just I can’t fish everywhere! If you do come to Alexandria to enjoy the great fishing please practice selective harvest and let go any crappie over 12″. There are plenty of 10″-11″ fish to eat. It’s a good rule of thumb that will help provide fish for the future. Good luck and have a great weekend.

    Amen on selective harvest Joe

Folks – PLEASE practice selective harvest and CPR the larger prespawn Crappie. You’re NOT the best crappie fishermen in the world when you limit out on 12+ inchers in an hour over a bed. Not much gets my blood to 212F but seeing three or four individuals sipping cans of Blatz around a picnic table 4″ thick with May prespawn slabs comes close

I was just wondering what is currently working right now. I do not want specifics on lakes, just methods and possibly jigs used. It seems to me the cold front around here really slowed them down a lot and am finding a very tough bite to say the least. We have a few good lakes around Hutchinson and they all seem to be dead for a bite.

Did they simply move to deeper water?

Bottle, sorry I didn’t get your question until now. The cold front hasn’t had much of an effect on some lakes and others it moved em right out. Obviously the fish need to be there to catch em so it wouldn’t hurt to look deeper as you suggested. That’s what they normally do when the water they were in get’s cooler. I’ve been having great luck in the black murky bottom bays. The water really seem to hold its temp and the fish stay put. I’ve been using mostly tube jigs with a minnow or waxy. The next step is move until you find em. It can seem like a never ending search at times. Just stay at it and you’ll find em.

By the way this weekend, the bite remained excellent. I hit four lakes and caught fish on all four of em. Some spots only had a couple and others I think you could have caught as many as you wanted. Good luck

Bosman, you’re right on getting your blood boiling. It’s hard to look away when you see that same boat out every day and it looks like their fish basket is about to explode!

All anyone can do is keep doing your part and hope others will follow.
