On my annual family vacation to the Alexandria area I had a chance to get out a few times and do some walleye fishing with my son Zach. We started out on the 1st Sunday morning of our trip at 5am. The weather was good and forecasted to be sunny and warm so I wanted to get out at daylight to get on the bite.

We started out on our 1st spot about 5:15 and Zach had the 1st walleye in the boat by 5:30am. We went over that spot several more times, but with no luck we moved to the 2nd spot. This spot was in the middle of the lake that had 2 points that came together. My plan was to pull spinners from point to point and see what side and depth the walleye were on. It didn’t take too long and we figured out that they were holding at the end of the left point in 18 ft of water and had not moved up shallower yet. After making a 5-6 passes we ended up catching 2 more walleye and ended the morning around 8am and had 3 walleye in the boat.

After Sunday we went on our annual guide trip with Joe Scegura and you can read all about that on a different post.
The weather turned bad on Tuesday and part of Wednesday morning so we didn’t get out until Wednesday evening and tried the same spots, with no luck. Thursday we did some pan fishing and found most of our fish off of deep points with cabbage in 8-12 ft of water. The interesting thing I found is that most of our bigger bluegills in the 7 ½ to 9 inch range all were still full of eggs. With the warmer spring I would have thought that they would have spawned by now. Maybe it got too hot too quick and they were not able to spawn.

Friday was the last full day of our trip so Zach and I decided to head out again at 5am and to the same as we did the previous Sunday. Again we found walleye in 16-20 ft of water at the deep end of the sandy points and started to catch fish early. My setup was pulling Jolly Roger Tackle Spinners with the new Northland Slick Stick which worked really well. The predominant color both mornings were Firetiger. We used crawlers, minnows, and 3 inch Berkley gulp minnow grubs in Chartreuse. This morning the walleye really preferred the Gulp over live bait and we caught 6 of our 7 fish with it in combo with the spinner. If you have never tried gulp with a spinner you are missing out as the extra scent and tail action of the grub is DEADLY. I have tested this out for 3 years and it WORKS!

This year was a great trip and cannot wait until next year!

Great report. I made my first Jolly Roger order on Monday after reading a couple of Mille Lacs posts and checking out the product. It was in my office by lunch today!! Looks to be great stuff. Can’t wait to get out and try it out.
