Advice needed on mounting temp speed sensor on Lund alaskan

I have a 2020 year Lund Alaskan boat with a IPS hull. I want to mount a new speed /temp sensor, the IPS Hull has a slight 15 degree angle. Instructions say to mount sensor flush with bottom of boat. If I do this it would put the speed sensor on about a 15 degree angle (would this make a difference ??) If I level the sensor then a corner of it will be below bottom of boat and would this be wrong? I am wondering if any one else has had this issue. I would like to try to get it right the first time. Welcome to the 20th century……..Assuming you mean a paddle wheel speed sensor, it would work best parallel to the water flow going past it, so tilted parallel with the bottom of the boat. That being said, I doubt it is critical. Accuracy is questionable under any circumstances compared to GPS speed. If you beach your boat, the magnet in the speed sensor picks up iron particles in the sand and eventually it won’t turn freely. Then you have to get out the hose and try to flush all the iron off it. Whatever you do, use a mounting board on the transom so you can make adjustments without poking more holes in the transom.

I would ask Why? Most newer units have GPS speed and temp built in already?

My fish finder does have built in temp sensor on transducer, but as far as know does not have the speed sensor. The speed sensor also has temp sensor and is the paddle wheel type. I questioned hummingbird teck support about input from two temp sensors into fish finder unit and they told me one would override the other. I did not know that GPS can tell also how fast you are going I may have wasted about 50 dollars. IF that’s the case I wont even install it, Going to look into that .Thank You Jim

Any Humminbird GPS model should display GPS speed on the screen. You might have to go into your settings to select temp as an item to display. Below is the rock bottom Helix 5 Chirp GPS G2 priced at $299.99. You can see the speed displayed on it.

Wow I just never gave the GPS a thought for the boat speed. You guys are right. I have a Solix 12 Humminbird Never had any kind of fish finder on my boat before and the one I have now is still new in box. I cant believe that the teck people at Humminbird didn’t say hey you don’t even need the speed sensor with this unit. I’ll just send it back or something thanks for the help jim

When you call Humminbird (or anyone’s internet support line) you don’t necessarily get a “tech” person. It could be someone who types your question into a PC program and reads you the answer. I love my Birds and my MinnKota, but remember Humminbird is headquartered in Eufala, Alabama and MinnKota is in Mankato, Minnesota. Not exactly locations that attract the best techies. smirk

If you have a Solix it has everything you need why send it back? Exactly which Solix do you have?

He’s going to send the paddle wheel back, not the Solix.
