I’ll make this a long story short.
I have been having issues linking my Helix 12 to my 1199 the past few weeks. They talk to each other, but I cannot get SI to show up on my 1199. Under “Network settings” both depthfinders are visible. Change the 1199 to the SI screen (Pulling from the helix) and it would give me the error within a few seconds and switch the view to map.
Finally spent time on this the last two days:
A little research on BBC and I found that this could be caused by the wiring to the units, and not so much related to Ethernet cords. http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=694467
So last night I improved my connections from a crimp to solder and it seems to have resolved the problem.
If you are having any Ethernet problems, and have concerns that your Ethernet cables are going bad; check you electrical connections first. In this case, too much resistance from a poor connection was causing the Ethernet link to fail. In the BBC post, too small of wire seems to be a cause, as well as non-soldered joints.
Upon first install, and up to 8 months later both my units worked and talked to each other find…Then I bring in my boat for a steering system upgrade (Mechanics messing around and near my wiring) must’ve loosed the crimp for the Ethernet connection to start failing.
Always nice fix a problem and even better when the solution was nothing you expected.
