adding clicker to Ambassadeur reel

I have a small Abu Garcia Ambassadeur and I’d like to add a line-out clicker to it. Can anyone recommend a shop in the metro or within a reasonable distance that could handle this?

Most of the model names and numbers are worn off but I can see remnants of “Ambassadeur” and “The Original” and it’s stamped made in sweden. It’s the small size I think, maybe 4600. Beyond that I have no idea what it is, C3, C4, whatever. No clue.

    Thanks!

Why would you do that? It’s apparently an obsolete reel and you want to pay someone to add a clicker to it at a cost that would certainly exceed its value. You’re putting lipstick on a pig. Throw it away and buy a new, modern reel.

Very helpful. We’ve taught my kids the value of keeping their mouths shut when they have nothing helpful to add to a conversation. A lot of grow adults seem to have missed that along the way.

The reel is in fantastic working condition, just has scratches. It’s been well used but well cared for. I’d take it over a new Made in China abu 8 days a week, and one of those would cost 3x what people pay to have clickers added.

People who throw things in the garbage and buy everything new make me laugh. My family buys used every opportunity we can. We don’t need new things or want to contribute to our massive landfills any more than we already do with our day-to-day living. When we’re done with something we do our best to pass it to a family who needs it and will use it

If anyone is looking for free fishing reels that probably still work fine, check ron’s trash can…

Tangler, I’ve seen bells you can clip onto your rod tip – same functionality.

But have you seen used bells for sale?

Your prerogative. It honestly should be pretty easy as those reels and their clickers are a simple design. Sorry that I can’t be of more help, but good luck.

Thanks fishwater and ralph for the thoughts.

    After digging a little more I’ve confirmed this is a C4 4600.

Brand new, Abu has these at $140, but no clicker comes installed on this size as it’s targeted more toward casting than trolling given the spool size. My 12yo kid uses this reel when we troll and the small size is ideal for him so it won’t be going anywhere. Plenty of 20lb braid fits.

I’m not sure they even make a clicker that will fit this reel, but I’m gonna try. I’ve found this, but only the C3 4600 is listed as compatible in this size. I’ll also look into the bells but definitely only if can find them on a good deal used (for you, funny guy dave).

The C4 and C3 4600 are the same size. I believe that aside from color differences, the only significant difference between them is the retrieve ratio. I would think if the clicker would fit a C3 4600 you could make it work on a C4 4600.

I could be wrong, but if it were me, I’d give it a shot.

Thanks Ralph! I shot an email to Abu customer service to try to confirm. The part is so cheap I’ll probably just give it a shot and give it away to somebody if it doesn’t fit.

I think rapala has a external line counter you can add. I doubt it is real accurate, but may work for you. One other option is to buy metered line. It braid like leadcore that changes colors every 10′

Thanks Mojo — but I’m looking for a clicker not a counter. And yes indeed, I run metered braid on all of my round trolling reels.

Sorry I read clicker and thought counter. It didn’t occur to me it was a clicker.

I believe that you’ll need a different side plate/cover as well. One with a slot for the clicker switch to move up or down.

No worries I appreciate the attempt to help!

Yes, I think this is what’s going to make this tough. Not many 4600 size plates out there with the cut-out. Will probably end up leaving it as-is, but I really appreciate the input from (almost) everyone.

I know its not a clicker – but for trolling purposes, I have known guys to measure out common lengths on their lines – say 75, 100, 150′ for example – and place bobber stops at those points. If you typically troll one or two different styles, this could give you some handy, cheap reference points?

    Just a thought.

See my response to Mojo — I don’t need a line counter, already using metered braid line to know how much line is out. But thanks anyway.

For reference — the clicker is the device that makes an audible “zzzzzzzzzz” when a fish hits your lure and starts peeling line out. Really nice for trolling in the dark when it’s not as easy to see your rod tip, etc. Also nice for setting the reel in free spool, adds just enough tension on the line to keep it from paying more line out, but easily gives when a fish or snag grabs the lure.

So back to your original question “Can anyone recommend a shop in the metro or within a reasonable distance that could handle this?”, I can’t recommend any shop in the metro, but a quick Google search does come up with a few results, including Vados Bait. They might have some parts reels laying around that might have the side plate that you need.

Awesome. Love that place for bait anytime I’m in the north metro, didn’t realize they did reel repair. Thank you. Someone pointed out to me in a PM that the 4600/5500/6500 are all the same diameter, just different width. So there is a sliver of hope that I could find something.

If Vados Bait can’t help you there is Matt in Eagle River WI that may be able to. I have ordered parts from him before. A buddy of mine has all his reels cleaned and repaired there.

Matt is also writing a column called Reel Matters for Muskie Hunter magazine now.
