I would like to purchase an action camera to play around with while I am fishing. Have looked at all the major models but am not seeing anything with a decent rating for night vision… 60% of my fishing is on the river after dark. Friend of mine is Flathead angler and uses a Contour HD — the quality at night is average at best. What’s a good product out there?

There’s no action camera that i would say has GOOD low light capabilities, in my opinion. The sensors are just too small. But there are some that are definitely better than others with the leader of the pack constantly changing. Based on personal experience I’d recommend the go pro hero 3+ for the best low light performance currently.

mattgroffPosts: 585August 20, 2014 at 9:51 pm #1447214I have heard good things about the germin virb. I don’t know much about it but it looks comparable to a go pro. But a couple people I talked to really liked them. Keep us updated as to what u get. Cause I am in the market soon before I go on my bear hunt.

A lot of features that I liked over the gopro and very easy to use. I shot a little bit of under tables and in darker places. Not bad, but definitely not night conditions. If you find something with good results please let us know
August 21, 2014 at 6:00 am #1447247I think there’s a huge market out there for low light compact video cameras.
If someone can crack the code.
August 21, 2014 at 12:14 pm #1447402I looked into getting a action camera this spring and from the reviews the Midland action cameras looked to be the best fit for me. I can look later and see if I can find the review that compared the go pro Sony and midland.

dbright, please post the review if you find it.
August 22, 2014 at 9:05 am #1447593I can’t imagine that the manufacturers aren’t trying to find a way to do it. Obviously it would really set them apart, but I am guess right now the technology is either cost prohibitive or to big to be in a compact camera.
August 22, 2014 at 10:16 am #1447631Everybody is trying but the size limitations of an “action cam” preclude the use of an image sensor capable of gathering the light needed to perform well in the dark.
For comparison sake, we have some video cameras we use to shoot in low light that have image sensors roughly the size of a business card. The image sensors in an action cam are about the size of a pinkie fingernail. The low-light capable cameras we have actually “see” better in low light than even a young set of human eyes and generate little if any digital noise. Those tiny little sensors in action cams generate so much noise at lower light levels the footage look like a swarm of bees.
Low-light capable action cams would be possible right now… if you were willing to accept a much bigger form factor. But then it really wouldn’t have an action cam anymore.
wannaplayPosts: 149August 22, 2014 at 10:28 am #1447636I use the GoPro. It can be a little cumbersome to use, and the remote discharges quickly. I have missed some quality shots because of battery issues. Takes great video when it is working.
August 22, 2014 at 2:01 pm #1447692Would having a LED light attached to the camera reduce the need to have low light sensor? Or would it affect the exposure or image quality?
The GoPro 4 looks like it’s worth the wait – maybe something will develop in the mean time. I am. I will continue to research and post any findings.
Here is the GP4:
August 25, 2014 at 12:42 pm #1448232My family gave me a Contour (remember them?) last year for Father’s Day. I remember looking into them years ago, but never pulled the trigger. For the money, great little camera. Got it cheaper as it is an original ROAM. Also got me a few of the accessories that I was most likely to use. Thus far, very happy with it. Since I have nothing to compare it to, I have no complaints. Contour has been bought and is planning on making a comeback, according to their website. No new cameras since the buy, but supposed to be in the works. I like the simple slide switch. On or Off, no questions.

I have not ran across the review I was thinking of but it was on YouTube. I will post it if I run across it.
