Nick sent over a photo of the transmitters we’ll be using to tag the LS we’re hoping to catch on the 23rd.
It has a 10 year battery life.
Receivers are stationed throughout MN along the Mississippi River and just into it’s tributaries. Also above and below dams.
When an implanted LS or Paddlefish swims by a receiver, it’s number is recorded along with a date and time stamp. Using this set up, the DNR can tell what size of fish (if any) are swimming through the lock and dams going up or down stream. Also tracking it’s path if the LS goes into a tributary for spawning or other reasons.
Here’s the photo of the transmitter and a map of what it can show us.
The Lake Sturgeon recorded started out in Prescott Beach where it was captured by the commercial fishermen. For some reason it started to head down stream and was recorded in the middle of Pool 3 then recorded above L&D #3.
Once it made it through the lock or dam, she passed Everts Resort and then decided she wanted to go back up to the dam which is where Johnathan Jonholtz caught her and used the on line tag reporting system.
There was a time when everyone felt the Lock and Dam stopped fish from migrating.

It’s Friday, June 23rd from 5 to dark. Everyone is welcome and can fish before and after the DNR event.
