A very expensive Ribeye – Yoder Pellet grill love inside

A customer gave me a fat ribeye, easily 2”. My Weber Genesis is locked up for the winter so I couldn’t burn it on that. I’ve always thought about a pellet grill so maybe now is the time. A weeks hard research that started with looking at Traegers, I found I couldn’t settle for anything less than a Yoder. I cook one steak a year, maybe, but I had to have the ability to really sear so that was one of the deciding factors. I set it up in the dark last night in sun zero weather. Got up this morning and burned it in, made Mrs. BHM a Panini, her favorite grill item to obtain her blessing. Through some sliced zucchini on there too which was amazing. Then it was time for the main event.

I set the Yoder for 225 and bright the internal temp to 110, took it off to rest for about 10 minutes while the Yoder cranked up to 650+ degrees (something most other pellet grill/smokers won’t do) and put this amazing sear and grill marks on it, 2 minutes total on each side, threw it on the top grate for a couple more minutes until it hit 120, took it off and wrapped and rested tip the Thermo pen showed it topped out at 129, 3 degrees shy of my goal of 132 medium rare. Came out pretty close to perfect. Whipped up some saucy mushrooms to top it with.

It’s entirely possible there was some tasty single malt scotch in the Yeti.

I am eating tacos as I read this and I feel cheated. That looks delicious and the markings are beautiful

Thanks! The Yoder makes it easy with the ability to monitor and adjust the grill from my phone. It’ll do exactly what you tell it too and as long as you tell it to do the right thing you’re golden. I made some wings last night and pulled them at 160. I should have let them go a little longer, they were a little underdone. So as long as you know what you are doing and give it the correct input you can’t go wrong.

Where is the drool emoji when you need one. Looks like a sweet pellet grill, haven’t heard of Yoder until now.

Cooking is a major part of my life, it’s my love language so I didn’t want to settle and have regrets.

Pork chops are on the menu tomorrow night. Maybe some Gouda mashed taters and some more grilled zucchini.

I’m not a pellet grill guy but I know enough about them to know Yoder is the top of the line. You chose well. When I sear a steak I usually open the top fire door on my stick burner throw a cast iron grate on top and sear over a open fire. Hard to beat that but I’d say you nailed that steak perfectly!

Yoders are an impressive unit for sure! That is a perfectly cooked steak. I made a few ribeyes in the same fashion you did on my RecTeq last summer except mine will get up to nearly 1000 degrees with the sear grate for searing. It was the best steak I have ever had and Ive been to high end steak houses multiple times.

Not familiar with Yoder but if the same as other pellet grills hard to beat the ease of grilling. Steak looked good and now I may have to pull out my green mtn pellet grill. Oh that’s right single digits and calling for -20 Thursday night. Hope it freezes the slush on the lake.

Heck no! I thought of that after I took the pic though. I prefer old school – Hamm’s, Brain Melt Premium etc. I draw the line at Pfeifer’s though.

You’ll never see a can of Busch Light on my property though and if you bring some you’ll be escorted off the property by security.

Great looking steak !!! Now I’m going to have to stop and get me a nice Ribeye on my way home and fire up my Pitboss. The pitboss also has a searing area. I’m not sure how high the temp gets, but its high enough to put a nice reverse sear on my steaks at the end.

I’m going to see how high this gets next time. My phone said it was 682 degrees when I put it on the flame. I’m going to put a Pizza stone in there and crank it up, try my hand at a wood fired pizza. Yoder even makes a wood fire pizza insert to put in that looks awesome but at $500 for that alone I figured I’d try it on the stone first.

Recteq was a consideration but I was looking for instant gratification and best I could tell Recteq was online direct order only.

There was a Traeger 855 Ironwood at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Coon rapids I spotted on my way to Northern Fire & BBQ in Minnetonka, the only Yoder dealer in MN. The Traeger is normally $1599 but they had one left, assembled on sale for $1,399.

Northern Fire and BBQ is a great store. If you’re in the 169 and Bren road area in Minnetonka I highly recommend stopping by. If you are easily tempted, leave your wallet with your wife or life partner.

I got the original Bullseye. Its a steal at $400 or so. Use it all the time. Even in these ridiculously cold temps it holds temp just fine. I have not had any issues with it at all. Done everything from wings, over the top chili, brisket and prime rib. Everything comes out fantastic!

Yes that is the only hangup for most people. They opened another showroom in Utah or somewhere out West, but yeah for those wanting to get their hands on one in person or see it first its hard to do. I took a chance and am very happy with it. A couple others here bought them too and from what I can tell no regrets.

That was the only reason I did not buy a Recteq. If down the road I end up replacing the Pitboss. It will be a Recteq for sure. So far the pitboss has worked well for me. The only complaint I have is tat in cold weather the Temp seems to swing a wide range from the temp setting. I know all pellet grills do, but I hear the recteq seems to have a smaller swing in temp.

same reason here that i didnt buy a rec tec. my first one was a treager and now i have a green mountain. the temp on mine will only swing a couple degrees if its super cold out. my old school treager would swing 20-30 degrees every time it added pellets but ya know what the food was always just as good tasting. the temp swing thing is blown way out of proportion and really does not affect much

Agreed to a point. Depends how much of a swing it is. Generally my recteq is within a few degrees of set point the entire time. I have a wifi temp probe and watch the app and once its up to temp it is basically a flat line the entire time.
Your oven doesnt hold a perfect temp either, but we dont have a probe in there to tell us what the actual temp is so we have no idea.

Well BHM, your post sparked my appetite.

I told the FW to get the Webber Smokey Joe fired up this afternoon so I don’t have to cook those ribeyes in the dark. With enough Hamm’s, it really doesn’t matter how they turn out. crazy

Steaks take twice as long with light beer.

I wish everyone still felt that way so I could buy it for 14 bucks a case again.
