….that spring has sprung. Our magnolia has flowers open this afternoon. This was supposed to be a shrub of 8′ to 10′ tall, but is now pushing twenty feet. Takes lots of pruning but its worth it. I love this “bush”, as Ma calls it. Tomorrow we should be getting the scent rewards.

Oh yes, the magnolia…or saucer magnolia specifically if I remember. Most are a small tree. Late this year (not surprising) usually earlier in April.

Spectacular but, oh so fragile and delicate…and fleeting. Could come to full bloom in the morning and if very windy, most all the blossoms have blown off by the afternoon.

Still waiting for crocus, daffodils, and the tulips later. Haven’t seen the Forsythia bloom yet. Another early bloomer in April.

Lilacs may not be out until June in central MN.

Funny I don’t remember seeing magnolias before moving. I thought they were a southern tree when I got here.

There are tons of hybrids for northern climes. White and pink that I know of personally, but I think there may be a yellow too.

I hiked up Barn Bluff last Sunday for the first time this year. A photo friend that I met who was taking sunrise photos everyday for 365 days in a row told me The Prairie Crocus should be in bloom.

There were three of us that hiked up there for the sunrise and flowers…well, I hiked up there more to get the winter out of my bones….either way, they were blooming!

The Magnolia is dear to my heart. I believe to be the first to bloom in the northern parts even before the buds come out on the trees. I have photos of our Mongolia in bloom with 2 inches of snow on it. Twenty feet is a special one.
We had a white one off our deck that gave us a great screen from the neighbors and a pink one out in the yard, both have expired sadly around my mothers passing.
Oddly, on another late spring the pink one after I thought it expired 2 years earlier bloomed on a early mothers day. I was going through a tough time at that time so that is one of many reasons the Magnolia is dear to my heart.

I planted this one as a memory tree after my mother passed away. She died on May 18th, two days before her birthday. It was a tough time. She had a dnr order [charm necklace] that the ambulance missed when she had a massive heart attack and they buzzed her a dozen times and got her heart working again, but she was pronounced brain dead and was put on equipment to keep her going until I could get back home. Carole and I drove up to our cabin for a three dayer and had a buddy along for fishing. The man with a star came knocking and let me use his jacked up telephone to call the hospital and talk with a doctor and my daughter, then we turned right around and drove home. I had power of attorney over her care and had her removed from support. Thankfully her time came fairly soon afterward, but its still hard to realize what you are doing.

She liked magnolias so now she has one with her name on it and I don’t have far to go to sense her being here.

We just had a great rain and the tree is starting to look like someone pasted cotton balls all over it. Two days…..then it’ll be snow white for a few and the scent will run thru the house if the windows or doors are open.

I remember that fragrance all so well.Loved bringing in cuttings into the house. Looks like this mothers day I’m going to be planting a Magnolia.
