A real sleeper for good eats….

SE Minnesota is full of these pricey places to eat all along the tourist trap places like Lanesboro and Rushford, and Preston. The list could go on, but Chatfield has a real sleeper in its midst: Jac’s Café. Jac’s is also one heck of a sweet little saloon too. We stumbled across a discount coupon for there a while back and last Saturday after visiting friends who live in Chatfield we stopped at Jac’s to check things out. Surprise, surprise.

The menu was chock full of tasty sounding entrees, but the lady and I settled on the 4 piece broasted chicken dinner served with their fresh cut, soft serve, potato chips. With or without the dip that accompanied the chips, they were delicious. I opted for the 4 pieces all white while Ma got whatever the 4 pieces came as. Mine was a ten spot because of the white meat, her meal was $9.00. We each had a beer which came ice cold. Ma and I can hold our own when it comes to eating, but we needed a box and finished it tonight after oven heating and it was as good as when we ordered it. The breast sections were huge.

This place is right on Highway 52, or main street, on the right as you travel south….sort of mid-block and a block and a half before the light. Upon going in the door we were shocked to see how much room there was for dining even though you enter into the bar side. As mentioned, the pricing is really reasonable and every dinner we saw set in front of neighboring tables was certainly something I would order myself.

We got in there about 5pm. By 6 it was filled….both sides. Currently they are having an Octoberfest with specials that feature bratwurst-based meals and fall style beers. The waitresses looked like they just came from the Alps. lol

If you’re traveling thru this corner of the world and get hungry, my suggestion is to stop at Jac’s. Its family friendly and there were families with kids of various ages eating there. The atmosphere was very friendly.

Another one of these places is Earthwood Inn and café, just outside of Two Harbors as you drive up from Duluth. Just across the small street from the car dealership found between the expressway and the scenic drive. The statue of Pierre is there to great you.

1/2 pound, hand pattied angus burgers very, very reasonable.

Another place like that is Kaffe Stuga in Harris MN. If heading north on I-35 toward Duluth take the Harris exit and turn right (East) to Hwy 61. At 61 take a left it is about 1.5 blocks north on the right. Great home cooked meals and dinner specials. They do not serve alcohol but, the prices are very reasonable and the food is delicious. How about a roast beef dinner which includes potatoes with gravy, a roll and vegetable for $7.50? They also serve breakfast and lunch.

Harris is north of North Branch about 6 miles.
