With everything going on in the world my fw has signed up for a permit to carry. I’m currently on her good side so I’m not worried for my safety. I don’t have a lot of experience with many different calibers and am not sure what we be a good gun for her to get. She wants something that would fit in a average sized purse and not kick to much.? I’m thinking a 22 is not enough stopping power. Any idea on something that would not break the bank ?

I cannot get my wife on board to get hers. My mom carries a 38 spend the money and go to a range that let’s you rent guns by caliber. My sister carries a 9mm it all depends on what you can fit comfortable in your hand. My normal carry gun is a 40 but I have carrried 9mm and 45 as well.
August 1, 2020 at 5:50 pm #1962194Timely post! I just took the carry class this morning. 6 of us, 2 were women. Both new shooters and were going to be gun shopping soon. Our instructor was very good. Former law enforcement and NRA certified instructor. He didn’t recommend specific guns or calibers. All he said was make sure the gun is a comfortable fit and that it was easy for them to shoot. He did highly recommend staying away from the sub-compacts. Being a purse carry gives a lot more flexibility. I recommend going to your favorite LGS and let her handle several and then shoot them. Ideally the store has that option. Instructor also empathized that the husband not pick out the firearm, but let her find the one she is comfortable with. IMO, caliber would be a .380 or 9mm. Good luck and I’m happy to hear she’s taking that step!
August 1, 2020 at 5:59 pm #1962195I would also add, don’t stop with just the carry class. Enroll is some sort of defensive shooting course. Then practice as much as possible to develop those correct habits and muscle memory.
August 1, 2020 at 6:25 pm #1962201it depends. I just issued my mom a conceal and carry after she took the class with me. My step dad bought her a 380 and 38 special. She handles a cock back on the 38 with out her hands hurting before my 1911 slide back. It will really take shooting many guns before naming the 1
deertrackerPosts: 9255August 1, 2020 at 6:53 pm #1962208I’ve been working with my GF on her shooting technique. She took the permit to carry class today and passed. She had been shooting my 9mm Shield but was trying to anticipate the recoil and was shooting low because of it. I’m going to have her try a .380.

Where about did you take the class?

August 1, 2020 at 7:11 pm #1962214The Kimber micro 9 is a nice little pistol,a single action 1911 design,basic model will run about 500,but a quality gun!!
August 1, 2020 at 7:14 pm #1962216I teach the conceal class if she needs one. And I have many she can shoot.

There are so many factors. I thought my mom would love a .380 and it was way opposite. Her poor old wrists couldn’t pull it back. The .38 was the key
And as I seen it I would have guessed oppositeJasonPosts: 832August 1, 2020 at 10:11 pm #1962245I suggest the following for women who struggle to pull back the slide action.
https://www.smith-wesson.com/9ez#
The M&P Shield EZ model is the easiest sliding gun that I have touched. The price isn’t bad either.
.38 ammo is easy to find, 9mm not so much.August 2, 2020 at 6:37 am #1962259Glock 42 is a .380
Glock 43 is a 9mm
Both are slim singlestack.Smith and wesson has an EZ line in 380 and 9mm the many weaker hand shooters have found nice, myself I hate their grip safety.
Springfield Hellcat is alright, I almost bought one.
I’d recommend renting some different guns from an indoor range several times to find out what she likes the best.
I would discourage anyone from keeping a gun in anything that can be separated from them, like a purse. All too often you see a purse sitting in a shopping cart and the person is many feet away from it.
The G42 it a very easy gun to carry IWB and easily hidden. Im still looking for a good spare mag clip for g42, snagmag is the best I’ve found yet but still not a big fan.bigpikePosts: 6259August 2, 2020 at 6:55 am #1962260If you live in Wisconsin you cannot carry with a mask on. 1 term Evers issued a mask emergency order in all public spaces. I agree I don’t think it should be in her purse. I’ll have a talk with her.

May want to check on that in WI. MN addressed this and you can carry while wearing a mask.

Any reason why my comment would derail this thread. If you conceal carry doesn’t keeping legal part of the deal?
August 2, 2020 at 9:18 am #1962288I like my Sig 365; check that out as a prospect.
The Sig P365 is awesome. I have small hands for a guy and the P365 fits perfectly and kick is not really an issue. It holds 10+1 rounds even though it’s smaller than the MP Shield. Its sites are awesome as well.
August 2, 2020 at 1:27 pm #1962343My LCR with built lazer sites to me is one of the safest conceal carry guns out there, no hammer no safety needed, line up the lazer sight and pull. Totally impressed for being snub nose how accurate it is, with the lazer it can teach how to control the muzzle while pulling the trigger with no ammunition needed.
Coletrain27Posts: 4789August 2, 2020 at 1:50 pm #1962349Go to a shop or store and take your wife with. Let her handle many guns and see what feels comfortable in her hands. 9mm and .380 would be my top 2 picks. Taurus G2C is a pretty nice gun for the money If your looking for something cheaper. Theres lots of reviews on YouTube on them.
There is so many good handgun manufactures these day and you can’t really go wrong with any of them imo.
August 2, 2020 at 3:06 pm #1962356The Sig P365 and the M&p shield would be my two suggestions. My Wife shoots and handles both of the well. With practice and time a 9mm should not be to much for her. I like the M&P because you can also get one in .22. The .22 is fun to shoot and does not feel much different than the 9mm. Good way to get lots of practice at a rather low cost for ammo
August 3, 2020 at 8:57 am #1962510Another vote for a .38 revolver. No safety, no need to rack a round if you don’t have one chambered. (Personally think you should always have a round chambered while carrying. But there are added risks.)
Something like a S&W Ladysmith. No exposed hammer means it wont discharge if dropped accidentally. Plenty of punch. Easy to conceal. Also easy to handle if left handed.
Reason #1 – Pull trigger and always goes BANG!

Exactly my opinion too Jon.
I hesitated to comment on this thread being I’m no expert on handguns.
What convinced me on a revolver was witnessing several semi-auto’s jam while at the gun range. One individual was an Army vet with plenty of experience with sidearms.
A disaster if that happens when the devil shows up at your door.
With one like this, as you said…Reason #1 !!

August 3, 2020 at 9:29 am #1962515Delivering rounds on target is more critical than “stopping power”. I urge you to look at existing data for defensive shootings and draw your own conclusions about which caliber is most effective, but there is no appreciable difference between 9×19/.40sw/.45acp so I would simply get her into a 9mm. There are so many options for a simple, reliable, plastic fantastic 9mm with better capacity than revolvers which enables you better opportunity to deliver rounds on target if the need arises. Head to a range where you can rent several options and let her shoot with each.
Purchase from a reputable manufacturer and practice, practice, practice. Ignore comments about revolvers being more reliable, this is objectively false. A good revolver can fail and a shitty semi can run 5k rds without failure, and vice versa. This is why you need to practice with whatever you buy.
Also something often forgotten- dry fire practice at home. It’s free, and you will become a more proficient shooter when you work on your trigger finger. Look up some exercises online and be safe, make sure the gun and mags are unloaded completely before beginning indoor dry fire practice.
Ice CapPosts: 2179August 3, 2020 at 9:39 am #1962518Conceal carry is a lifestyle change to a large degree. Does you’re workplace allow you to carry? Are you willing to go into a business that is posted no guns allowed while you carry? If not you will be leaving your gun in the car often times which is risky and then how much are you actually carrying your weapon versus having it locked up in your car. The last place I worked for 15 years before I retired would not even allow you to have a gun locked in your car while on the premises. If you want to carry and conceal properly you will be buying new clothes to do so comfortably and properly.
Going out to dinner and having a beer or two or a few glasses of wine? Best leave that carry piece at home. I was never a fan of a woman carrying a gun in a purse for a number of reasons. I’ve had a cc permit for 15 years. About the only time I carry now is if we are travelling a distance out of town. Given where we live we are more likely to have a home break in at night than we are to be mugged or assaulted while running errands around town in broad daylight.
My wife shoots everything I own from a .22 to a AK47 and knows how to operate all of them just as well as I do. I bought her a FN SLP 12 gauge that she keeps by the bed side at night up stairs and she keeps a handgun with her downstairs.
I would not discount a .22 caliber for a lady to carry. Graveyards are full of people laid low by a .22 it’s all about shot placement.
August 3, 2020 at 9:43 am #1962521Plenty of great advice already. Im not a big wheel gun guy so I dont know much about that. I would work on malfunction training once you find her something she is comfortable with. I would have a buddy load a snap cap randomly in a mag to force myself to learn that. the issue you will run into now is finding ammo.
