Remember when every backyard had a burn barrel. Paper, cardboard, paper shopping bags got burned. Poof, gone.
Now the landfills are overflowing and plastic bags are clogging our waterways.

The air is cleaner. The environmentalists are happy.

One use bags is all I have to say, why is it taking so long?

On Maui, there are ZERO plastic bags.. its mostly re-useable or paper. They charge for the paper and give a credit for re-useable.

My trash ends up in an incinerator. There’s a large one in Mpls near Target Field that burns the vast majority of trash collected in this area. I believe that it produces energy/electricity while it burns too.

Yep, they could eliminate all single use plastics today and I’d be fine with it.

    Yep, it does.

There’s one in the Brainerd area too. My brother in law used to work for Von Hanson Meats in Baxter and they are required to ship their deer carcasses to that facility to be burned because they’re in a CWD zone. Previously, they could toss it all in a dumpster and ship it to a landfill. It costs more to have it sent to the incinerator.

I still see the burn barrels up in cheese head country. Up at the farm they keep a few different garbage cans to separate the burn, garbage, compost and then pop cans on the porch. Their burn goes into the the wood burner now in the work shop. They really do not produce much garbage up there compared to a family here in the cities.

Interesting topic on the tradeoffs we make for the sake of “being green”.
It is often argued that no other chemical has saved as many human lives as DDT, but it was linked to the endangerment of various birds.
Battery-powered vehicles and energy sources such as wind and solar are regarded as environmentally friendly due to their lack of carbon emissions, but more metals such as copper, lithium, etc. are required to be mined in order to increase the capacity of these energy sources.

Dam, I hope I don’t forget that….I just took a bag out to the barrel!

We seperate and have multiple gartbage cans. Burn, no burn, recycle….We have about 1 bag of actual garbage every two or so weeks

As kids we would spend hours in the backyard burning trash, loved burning plastic breadbags on a stick listening to sound it made when dripping down.

    Don’t forget burning leaves also.

and this was in S. Mpls.

    Ahhh loved the 60’s

I remember hearing about the incinerator for deer carcasses because of CWD, but if there is one it isn’t a large incinerator that is generating electricity as the county landfill is between Brainerd and Crosby and it’s very busy.

We had a burn barrel that “ate” a lot of things it probably shouldn’t have. I’ve got no problem with them not being used as often now or made illegal in places. Most single use plastics could go tomorrow and my family would adapt.

Our trash that isn’t recyclable ends up in La Crosse being burnt to help make electricity also I believe. We fill a dumpster that is emptied monthly…although if we avoid hosting parties or the holidays it is often not plump full.

    Great post Greenhorn!

On the OP, I hate how much plastic is forced on you these days. Buy a couple items at the CStore or Grocery store, and it’s wrapped in plastic in a plastic container and then they want to plastic bag it for you. At least our daycare reuses plastic bags for blowouts, so they get more than 1 use, but still so wasteful. Shopping at Aldi/Costco at least plastic bags are not an option, but a recycling bin of cardboard is less than ideal too.

My neighbor has a wood boiler and he burns everything in there. He literally doesnt even have trash pickup. It gets so damn bad with smoke sometimes I have called the EPA and they came out and tested his ashes and issued him a citation. It has been much better since. It sucks not being able to have your windows open because the smoke is so dang back it chokes you out.

One of my neighbors at my previous house would burn his leaves almost every fall, if he was legally able to. It was a stinky, white plume of smoke. He needed a permit to do it. Last year he couldn’t do it because it was so dry. I have to imagine they won’t be issuing him one this fall either because of the drought.

Brings back memories! My Dad was in the trades his whole career and he would often salvage materials left from jobsites to build contraptions growing up. We used to have an AWESOME trash incinerator made out of an old 55 gal drum, set on its side and dug into the side of the hill. The top was cut-out and he welded on a steel door. Then he cut a hole in its side and ran a stack out of it that stuck out the top of the hill. That thing would burn like jet engine! I would love helping him burn trash.

those garbage burners are going to the wayside. They already shut down and tore down the one in elk river. Red wing may not be far behind. It’s cheaper to dump the garbage in a hole is there explanation.

We don’t have a burn barrel per day, But do have fire rings. At the cabin we burn all paper, cardboard etc. Nothing gets thrown in there that’s not supposed to. On occasion I burn paper products in my fire ring at home but most gets recycled.

    Here is an unpopular opinion…
Why not have those sitting in prison sort trash?
Burnable, recyclable, food waste and other.

Report to your locker for your work clothes, and your current clothes go in for washing.
After shift you strip down naked, go into shower on one end, leave on the other and now in your locker is a new set of clothes waiting for you.

That works for me. Eliminate the workout rooms and weight machines and make 8 hours at the trash pile, mandatory. No work for a day adds a day to the sentence. If you’re a lifer, no work on any day, no tv for that day….. and definitely no work out room.

Dutchboy – the environmentalists are never happy, just less unhappy that burning in the city is illegal. They are still plenty unhappy about many things.

Would you want prisoners really sorting thru garbage that could contain any type of assortment of weapons? Strip down or not, there are ways around, ever seen pulp fiction?

There are about 1.2 million prisoners in the United States. This is definitely a large, expensive group to provide for. I’d have no problem with having them do more work that helps society to pay back their debts. Dealing with garbage/recycling seems feasible.

I’m currently working on my own system to get rid of my recycle bin. 95% of what goes into it is cardboard which I like to keep for starting fires.

Oh and when the trash guy shows up both the recycle and trash go into the exact same compartment in the same truck. My carrier isn’t sorting, or if they are they’re doing it at the dump. So why am I paying extra for a recycle bin to be emptied every week?

That’s odd. The garbage truck and recycling truck have always been different where I’ve lived.

I do know that they do sort at the recycling center though. If yours are being picked up by the same truck, that’s very likely what’s happening.

With fee’s my trash bill was $25 a month here in International Falls. I averaged 1 1/2 bags a week at most. I now bring my own trash to the country landfill, it’s on my way to town and am paying about $8-$10 a month now.
    It works for me.
