Well I was out fishing today (like every weekend) and I chase walleye 75% of the time, but the weather took a turn for the worse and ended up blue skies and flat calm. Decided to give the bass a go. I was throwing a jerk bait over weed beds when I came to a point. The point was 2.5 to 3ft deep and I just kept casting, catching bass and pike almost every cast. Well in a cast into 3 feet of water as I worked it back and was about 10ft from the boat I had a mid 20s walleye slowly following it right up to the edge of the boat! I’ve never seen a walleye do that before. Let alone hang out in 3 feet of water on a flat calm sunny and HOT day.

Second and weirdest was from a pike. I made a cast, worked the jerkbait back at a medium pace, then 10 feet from the boat bam a pike smoked it. I laid into it and the fish gave me 3 big head shakes and the jerkbait popped out and floated up to the surface, and I still had the fish! Turns out he had ahold of my snap swivel and somehow managed to unsnap it and shake the jerkbait off. Pretty stoked he didn’t get my crank I scooped it up with the net, retied my snap on to fresh line, made a cast and bam bit off by another pike. So that was the end of that spot lol

Couple years ago on opener I was throwing x raps up towards a shallow weed line for walleye and most of them were following it like a muskie, even caught 2 boat side on the figure 8. Lots of fun!

Casting crankbaits I have had alot of walleyes chase and hit rite at the boat.Have also seen very large schools of walleyes in 3ft of gin clear water on hot flat calm days. That made me figure how to fish the shallow weeds for them. Its an overlooked pattern by most others and youd be suprised how many are tucked into a few ft of water.

Great story. Reminds me of Pepin a year or two ago about this time of year. Was fishing walleye with a buddy who loves to bass fish, but grudgingly came with me. As we were trolling, quite a distance from shore, he got impatient and started casting a giant spinner bait like a mad man, and I kept telling him, um….dude, we’re walleye fishing right now, you’re not gonna catch a….BAM! He hauls in a nice 20″ walleye. I almost made him release it just out of principle. Heh, heh.
