A Bumpboard Day

It was a great first day on the water today. I took my dad and brother out today and hit one of my favorite springtime lakes. The first hour started a bit slow along a weed edge, but then I went to another traditional springtime spot and we could see the walleyes swimming in 4ft to 5ft of water. Simply pitch the jig/minnow out ahead of them and often times it was game on. Sight fishing walleyes is something that will never get old!

It was hard to find smaller fish, but we did put 7 in the box and released the rest. All fish today were from 18.5″ to 27″. Here’s the 4 biggest of the day which taped out at 25, 26.5. 26.5 and 27 (all cpr of course). Best “big fish” outing we’ve ever had on a local southcentral MN lake.

Was a super fun morning! First time I got to fish since last September. So that itch was a full-on rash! jester

It’s nice having Sundays & Mondays off as your weekend. Only 1 other boat that was out for only 1.5hrs.

So glad to be back at it!

Intrigued by the thought of sight fishing them. How did you know they were walleye initially? If I saw a fish up shallow without seeing the white tail, I would assume pike or bass. Those southern lakes are intriguing.

We could see the white tips on the tails. Lots of carp in shallow too, but the white tips stood out in the clear water.

It was a morning deal too. Once 10:30am hit (or so) they were mostly gone with the clear blue sky. If it were cloudy it would’ve been an all day bite I think. Some fish moved to the weeds after 10:30am

Never realized there were good numbers of walleyes this big in southern MN, other than the Cedar.

This particular lake has quite a few larger fish in it right now. A few years ago there was many in the 16″ to 20″ range, but now they’re mostly 20″ to 27″ and I’m sure there’s a few that would surpass 28″.

Snuck out solo after work today. Not quite as good as the first outing, but very fun nonetheless!
