On Sunday (5/13) the weather warmed a bit and three days of NE winds cleared the water of Kakagon and the fish’ mood definitely changed. With me was John Newland and Rod Otzenberger who both fished with me for the first time last spring. Water temps were in the mid 50’s so I opted to fish deeper for prespawn fish. It was a very good decision as we boated between 35 and 40 smallies with 5 fish over 5 lbs. We found the big prespawn females staging in approx 8 ft of water. Suspending jerkbaits were the key along with a few fish caught on a Booyah Swim jig and an assortment of shallow running crankbaits. Here are two pics of John and Rod with some beautiful bay smallies.
