I will be purchasing the above unit at some point this winter. I am wanting to mount this unit on the bow instead of the console where my 987 was as I spend 95% of my time trolling and pitching to cover. I am unsure how or where to mount the transducer. I am leery of using a trolling motor mount (MinnKota Terrova with ipilot) for fear of damage, but know of no other way. I also would like to be able to scout waters without having the troller down. I had been using a 787ci2 on the bow and will move it to the console. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Having the transducer on the trolling motor is nice just for the fact that you’re seeing what you’re actually on top of instead of seeing what’s twenty feet behind you. Just my opinion.

Am I missing something? I thought the Terova has the transducer built in:???:

I am guessing that the OP would like to me able to utilize the SI transducer at the bow.

Mounting the transducer to the TM is the only way to fly. I did this last year and my only regret is that I didn’t do this 4 years ago. After fighting the poor images and interference you get from the US2 transducer having great images up front and no aggravation is amazing.

I have been using trolling motor mounted transducers for at least 10 years without problems.
I did hit things but never enough to damage a transducer.
The nice thing about having the SI up front is
the lead time between the fish ID and hook set.
With a little experience, you can actually call the hook set
by the position of the fish on the display history
    and boat speed.

Thank you for the responses and the link. I needed some reassurance from those who have run the troller set up with the side imaging. I believe I will run it that way.

I believe he is but I recommend even just putting the 2D transducer on the TM instead of using the US2.

Ive had my HDSI on the Terrova since 08. Ive never damaged a transducer on the trolling motor, but I have damaged a couple cables from squishing them in the slot while stowing. I no longer have this problem, with the way I have mine rigged.

There is only one way to go if you are going to mount the HDSI ducer on the TM. That is the Transducer Shield and Saver mount.

Route to cable in the shaft slot, so it isn’t flopping around on the outside.

Reddog – What did you change with regard to the way you route the cable to take care of the “squishing” issue?

As you can see in the picture, I routed the cable thru the US2 module (actually made a replica) and the cable now runs inside the shaft in place of the US2 cable..

And yes, this does void your Terrova warranty.. )

Obviously, I love SI on the trolling motor, or I wouldn’t have gone thru such effort to do so.

Originally I took the control head off and ran the cable on the slot in the shaft. I could get about two years out of a transducer before the cable was compromised. (Some people have no problems) this was with two different Terrovas. It was after the third replacement that I changed to how I now have it. One transducer I didn’t take the time to seal in the slot and damaged it immediately. (I was on a fishing trip and didn’t take the time. My bad)
