'93 Mercury Classic Oil Leak

  • #1779299

I have developed an oil leak that must of have happened over the winter. The boat is stored in an unheated barn. Motor is a 1993 40hp Mercury Classic oil injected two stroke. Looking for a good reliable mechanic in the Twin Cities area. Any recommendations?

if you are willing to tackle it yourself,I can walk you through about anything on that series of motor, but first we need to know something.

is the oil leak from the lower unit,or the powerhead??

Power head. I’m pretty sure it has something to do with tank that holds the oil…or at least where the tank connects to the motor. When I tilt up the motor oil is leaking out onto the transom.

more than likely the oil is dripping out of the carbs when the motor is trimmed upped, reason being is the 2psi check valve between the oil pump and carbs is hung open and allowing oil to flow from the tank thus overfilling the carbs.

my own motor which is a twin to yours is/has been doing this same thing.
I found my gas line going back to the tank is full of oil which is a dead giveaway of this happening.
hard to start, smokes to hell wont have it and rough running until its cleared out and will run fine for a long time with regular usage.

google mercury 2psi check valve, about ten bucks to your door.
the line on either side is heat shrunk plastic tubing and is already too short from the factory.
replace the line with tygon fuel line, easy peasy.

while you are at it,check the bearing drain hoses from their fittings from top to bottom and in between the cylinders.
you will have to remove the ignition assembly to get to them,no problem, six bolts if yours is like mine, lay it to the side, check them for cracks, breaks near the fittings and such.

if you ignore the bearing drain hoses, the cylinders between will go lean and burn up the motor in short order, expensive !!!!

if I can be of further help,pm me.
    tight lines,best fishes,and good luck !!

Thanks for the help. I’ll track this stuff down. This engine has been pretty much a trouble free workhorse so I want to keep it running as long as I can.
