A lot of great videos and stories coming out of Normandy France this week as they commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Cool to see so many living vets able to make the trip to participate in this. Wish I could be there to honor a great-uncle who is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery. If it works, here is a link to the American Battle Monuments Commission live stream of their ceremony this morning.

Any time that I see a movie about D-day, I just can’t fathom what they went through in the landing.

The greatest generation for sure. My grandpa got to see the aftermath of the invasion from the air.

Same, I truly think if something like that was ever to happen again there is no way we win that fight. They were just wired different than the soft generations to come after them. So much respect for those guys and what they went through.

My father in law landed on Normandy Beach on D Day… he wouldn’t talk much about it, except to myself and another brother in law who was in the service also. He carried a lot of inside scars for sure.

No kidding. I honestly think our country started a downhill spiral when they eliminated the draft, took corporal punishment out of the schools and banned public school prayer. Now special rights for the lollipop community and certain races and the spiral keeps on keepin on going down.

I respect all vets and those vets that have past.

Had a few relatives who fought in that war. My great uncle wasn’t at D-Day, but fought his way through Italy and the Pacific with the army. Guy was hard as woodpecker lips and had stones somewhere around the density of tungsten or bismuth.

My Grandfather on my Father’s side (died in 2006) fought in WW2. He wasn’t at Normandy but he later help liberate Buchenwald concentration camp. Rarely talked about it. I was kind of too young to realize that he had done too.

    RIP Grandpa John

Watched the ceremony. Best part to me was the French president pinning 11 US veterans with the Legion of Honour. Greatest generation for sure. As far as how the current generation would respond, I hope we never find out. But, history has a way of repeating itself.

Memorial Day (2012 film) is a very good movie about World War 2 and Iraq told from the point of view of members of the 34th Infantry Division “Red Bulls” and 82nd Airborne division. Ties the previous generation and current generation together. This movie was on Hulu before but not sure if it still is. Very emotional movie so be forewarned. Does a little too good of a job of showing why they don’t talk about it much.

Agree…the greatest generation. My late father-in-law and I were very close. He was a West Pointer and served in France, commanding an artillery battalion. Tough little bugger. Brought home some memorabilia that I have to this day. When he moved to MN to be near us, he sold a functioning German machine gun and tons of live ammo to a pawn shop for $100! He frequently told me that he had dark secrets that he would take to his grave about what transpired there in France on ‘V’ day. I can only imagine…

I watched part of the early ceremony and recorded the rest. Later saw a lot of the European leaders arriving for the later ceremony. Very emotional seeing all the old vets there. Couldn’t imagine what they went through that day and the rest of the war and carried with them for 80 years. One kid lied about his age to join the service. He was 15!!! Should’ve been a sophomore in high school. That’s how much they wanted to serve our country.
My dad served as a combat field medic in the Philippines and then after WWII ended, finished up his stint in Korea. Never talked to much about it except for some anecdotal stories about the camp life. One I’ll share: The troops didn’t like the powdered eggs much. Since eggs were fragile, the troops would hurry when rations were dropped by parachute to recover as much of the broken eggs as they could. One troop went too early and another pallet coming down hit and killed him. cry

I saw the part where Biden bent over at the waist and appeared to be straining to squeeze one out. The French PM’s wife give him the evil eye. Everyone else was trying to ignore it.. He was also caught on camera last week walking out to Marine one and having to stop, bend over and squeeze one out. When you see it on video, there’s no doubt what’s happening.

So a bunch of posts giving much deserved honor and respect to those who displayed unimaginable courage and quite possibly saved the world and all you care do to is bypass that because politics means that much to you. You could have posted any form of tribute or thanks to those who literally gave their lives for us but commenting on a guy you don’t like is more important?

I have a very strong desire to say something the mods wouldn’t think twice about kicking me off for.

Get over yourself and find something else besides politics to care about. You could hijack any other thread but you chose one about men who jumped into shallow water and ran into machine gun fire. Men who parachuted into enemy territory and were shot at on the way down.

Show some damn respect for these veterans who are no less than heroes.

Dan: I commend you for your response. My Uncle and Dad both landed on Omaha beach 80 years ago on 6/6/44. Both lived to see the end of the war, my dad with a shot out hip and my Uncle with a burned scarred face. Why some have to make everything political I will never understand.

Dan – thanks for the rational response. Plenty of other political threads to trash Joe and Don. Don’t need to hijack this one.

Here’s Reagan’s speech 40 years ago, at the 40th anniversary. I had never seen it, but a very powerful speech and quite the juxtaposition to today. Definitely worth 13 minutes of your time.

Biden also plagiarized the heck out of Reagan’s speech. My heart really aches for the WWII vets that are still alive to see what the NWO is doing to the country they fought for.
